Kjaer breaks Denmark appearance record: “My family, my team and my country”

By Oliver Fisher -

There was a memorable moment for Simon Kjaer last night as he broke the record for the most appearances of any player in Danish national team history.

Kjaer started as the captain once again for Denmark last night against San Marino, and they were heading towards an embarrassing result when the home side levelled the game in the second half, but they eventually won 2-1.

In the previous game against Kazakhstan, Kjaer had tied Peter Schmeichel for the most appearances in Denmark’s history with 129, and last night’s start meant that he went past the legendary former goalkeeper.

Kjaer seems to have no intention of stopping there either, with the Danes currently very much on track to qualify for the 2024 European Championship in Germany, which could well be the centre-back’s final major tournament.

On social media, Kjaer said: “These guys! This team! This staff! These fans! My family, my team and my country. Proud and humble. Thank you from my heart!”

The fans honoured Kjaer with a banner which he acknowledged before the game.

    1. Yea? Well he should have cleared the ball properly on San Marino’s goal lol. Not his best game(he did have a goal saving block so there’s that too) but he’s still useful. His age is Catching up with him though and it’s evident this season

  1. Great accomplishment by kjær but yesterdays match is propably the worst match ive ever seen in my entire life as we had trouble beating san marino and only won 2-1 away when it will al due respect is a game that should have been won 6/8-0- The ref was horrible though as he allowed the san marino players to commit one freekick after the other that should have gotten them several red cards but still that shouldnt be an excuse as san marinos best players is playing in serie c.

    1. I don’t know much about Denmark but quality wise your players should be head and shoulder above San Marino… Right combination, imo between experienced veteran, decent prime players and exciting youngsters.

But well, you still tied with Slovenia in your group which Imo is one of easier qualification group. Good luck Martin.

      1. No question there, according to transfermarkt denmarks national team has a valuation of €403.00m whereas san marino has a valuation of €920k and is also placed last in the rankings of football nations in the entire world. They hasnt won a game in 11 years or something and hadnt scored a goal in the qualification untill yesterday so yeah we really should be able trash them.

I think denmarks group absolutely is in one of the easiest groups and slovenia should also be beatable for us but we will also play against them at home in november which if we win it will make us winners of the group. We actually lost 3-2 against kasachstan as well after leading 2-0 in astana. I believe the team hasnt really been itself since the world cup but beforehand that tournament denmark hadnt lost many matches or played bad football for maybe 3-4 years and also beat bigger football nations,
Thanks, im confident we will quailfy for the euros but then they will have to buckle up and show their actual qualities otherwise it will become a huge embarrassment for us.

        1. apparently san marino hasnt won a match since 2004 according to danish tv so that should put things in perspective 😀

          1. Conceding a goal against San Marino is not a very good feeling, haha, apparently they were targeting Hojlund to injure his knees. Such an unsportsmanlike conduct from them, if it is true. I am rooting for them to have a good performance this time, was really disappointed with their World Cup performance. Big fan of some Danish players, especially Kjaer and Eriksen.

          2. They did target him throughout the match and kjær even said in a danish interview that as he understands italian he could hear that they was talking about that they should target his knees, kjær also said he had tried to make the referee aware of it but to no avail. Højlund was also by purpose kneed in his back a bit like what happened to neymar when at the worldcup broke some vertebraes in his back and in the end højlund was also elbowed right in his face when a player ran by him in their own penalty area and thats just what i can remember from the top of my head….then there was the other danish players who was also pretty manhandled by them, they also tried to break kjærs leg from the looks of it.
I dont mind hard and aggressive football and sometimes longs for the 1980’ies but i think san marino should have had at least 3 players thrown out but denmark should still be able to beat them convincingly or at least kick their arses in the process.
I like them both and considering we are a small nation with maybe 5.5 mil citicens we have generally fostered a lot of good footbal players through the years.

    2. Very pleased for kjær and the Danes. They seem to be a good bunch of people.
San Marino may have scored but at least
you didn’t face the humiliation of a goal in under 8 seconds like they did against England in 1993….😱

      1. Thanks Ned very kind of you to say so my experience with english or for that matter british people has also left me with good impressions.

I couldn’t remember that 8 second goal from 1993 against england so i looked it up but at least you guys won 7-1 in the end 🙂
That defending though by stuart pearce was almost as shocking as how quick or for that matter that they even succeeded to score 😀

    3. Yep Denmark should have done better. I was looking at the game like wtf. You guys should have put away that game much earlier

    1. Are you by any chance also from denmark as Bo isnt an uncommon name around here or at least wasnt previously ?
As a dane myself i can sometimes be a bit apprehenssive about us aquirring danes as i doesnt want to see them occupying our bench but i agree those we have had that was first team players has generally done well and the same can be said about the teams they played in.
