Kjaer breaks Denmark appearance record: “My family, my team and my country”

There was a memorable moment for Simon Kjaer last night as he broke the record for the most appearances of any player in Danish national team history.

Kjaer started as the captain once again for Denmark last night against San Marino, and they were heading towards an embarrassing result when the home side levelled the game in the second half, but they eventually won 2-1.

In the previous game against Kazakhstan, Kjaer had tied Peter Schmeichel for the most appearances in Denmark’s history with 129, and last night’s start meant that he went past the legendary former goalkeeper.

Kjaer seems to have no intention of stopping there either, with the Danes currently very much on track to qualify for the 2024 European Championship in Germany, which could well be the centre-back’s final major tournament.

On social media, Kjaer said: “These guys! This team! This staff! These fans! My family, my team and my country. Proud and humble. Thank you from my heart!”

The fans honoured Kjaer with a banner which he acknowledged before the game.
