French midfielder reveals why he rejected Milan in favour of Mönchengladbach move

Manu Kone has confirmed that he turned down the chance to join AC Milan because he favoured a switch to the Bundesliga.

Kone has been repeatedly linked with a move to Milan in his young career. There had been previous interest in the midfielder before he moved to Monchengladbach in 2021 from Toulouse, which is when he is believed to have picked Germany over the Rossoneri.

Milan were in for Kone during the 2024 summer transfer window too, but while Roma were able to offload Bove to Fiorentina, the Diavolo were unable to sell Ismael Bennacer.

Thus, Roma managed to seal a loan with obligation to buy deal for €18m, and Kone is now in his second season with the Italian capital club, for whom he has played every minute of the season so far.

Kone gave an interview to Corriere della Sera (via MilanPress) in which he talked about his time at Roma so far but also about a background story from his past regarding Milan.

“I spoke to Milan, it’s true. Massara called me, but for my development it was right to go to Borussia. Then here at Roma I found Massara again: the circle closed anyway, right?” he said.
