CorSera: La Maura on pole as Milan seek agreement after crucial day of meetings

By Oliver Fisher -

There were two rather important meetings that took place yesterday as Gerry Cardinale and AC Milan continue to push for a new stadium.

This morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via PianetaMilan) takes stock of the situation regarding the construction of the new stadium, recalling that Gerry Cardinale and Giorgio Furlani met first with the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, and then with the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana.

There is a reason behind the double meeting too: the area of the La Maura racecourse – where Milan are hoping to build a new stadium – is part of Milan’s ‘Parco Sud’ (South Park), which is becoming an area of regional jurisdiction.

The hypothesis is that of signing a ‘programme agreement’ between Milan, the City Council and the Lombardy Region which would help in overcoming the constraints on building permits. In short, the club are very much pushing to make La Maura the site.

According to the paper, the press release from Snaitech – the current owner of the racecourse area – has not changed the plans and so the club will begin to deepen the study of the La Maura area.

Emanuela Carpani, Superintendent of Fine Arts, recalled that there is no restriction – landscape or cultural – on the San Siro area at the moment. However, there could be one from 2025, 70 years after the construction of the second ring.

What will Inter do? Their owner Steven Zhang is irritated and he considers it a disgrace that he has not yet met with the Milan ownership, especially because they do not consider the project of the new shared stadium at San Siro to be over.

The Nerazzurri are also working on a Plan B, however. Subject to a confidentiality agreement , the agreement signed by Inter provides for the construction of a solo facility between the Municipalities of Assago and Rozzano the identified area, which is privately owned.

Therefore, Milan’s future seems to be at La Maura, Inter’s in Rozzano and only concerts at the current San Siro.
