GdS: Still in development – the latest on the new stadium as San Siro turns 100

AC Milan and Inter will open their new stadium in 2031, 12 years after the idea was first conceived, but they’re not there yet.

The San Siro debacle has gone on for years. Both clubs have looked at their futures and at one point, it seemed they’d split. However, finances and opportunities meant that a continued stay at San Siro was agreed upon. Yet, they’re not at the finish line yet.

San Siro turns 100… but

Today, Gazzetta dello Sport have looked at the new San Siro on the day the old home turns 100. However, the new stadium – whilst not yet built – is already seven years old.

In recent months, small changes have taken place at San Siro to get ready for the new stadium. The historic south ticket office was demolished in June and the west side of the stadium has been remodelled.

Small changes will continue to take place over the next few years, with the new home of the Milanese clubs not set to open until 2032.

Problems gone and problems to come

It’s difficult to picture the new stadium currently, but the obstacles are crystal clear. After all, this has been a multi-year challenge and there are still challenges to face. For example, the implementation plan must be approved by the Municipality, and the criminal investigation into ‘bid-rigging’ still needs to be finalised.

It’s a necessity for both clubs and its opening in 2031 would represent the end of a 12-year battle since the first stone was laid in 2019 – a virtual stone laid by Populous with the ‘Cathedral’ design in 2019.

Things look to be in a good place now, but there is still a lot to do and a lot to overcome before 2031.
