Le Figaro: PSG turn away from pursuit of Milan star Leao – the reasons

By Oliver Fisher -

Paris Saint-Germain will not prioritise a move for Rafael Leao this summer and will instead focus on other targets for the attack, according to a report.

PSG have been linked with the 24-year-old winger over the past few weeks given that they are increasingly likely to lose Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer with Real Madrid his expected destination.

Reports in both the French and the Italian press have named the Ligue 1 champions as being concrete suitors for Leao, who continues to be the driving force of Milan’s attack.

However, according to Le Figaro (via Calciomercato.com), PSG will give priority to making a big splash in midfield and while they will sign a winger, they are not going to offer the amount that Milan want for Leao.

The Parisians will not go all-in for the former Lille man or for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. Both are welcome profiles, but for different reasons – mainly economic given the Financial Fair Play factor – they seem unrealistic targets.

Losing one of the world’s best players in Mbappe on a free transfer certainly doesn’t help, because they are missing out on a potentially huge sum which could then be reinvested into different areas of the squad.

  1. I would love to keep Leao longer if we can. He still has developing to do and so much to offer. If the coaching change in the summer is a sensible one then Leao can truly explode.

  2. It was never a report based on any solid ground besides reporters speculating because of prior relationships between current PSG director and Osimhen/Leao, who signed them previously at Lille.
PSG already has good enough wingers. I mean is Leao really such an upgrade over Dembele for PSG to speed 100 mil?
Also, PSG is bringing Xavi Simmons back in the summer.
Plus as I said yesterday, Italian media keeps writing reports about how Milan doesn’t have untransferable players and everyone can be had for the right amount. Today, they did it again.
Do inter or Juventus have untransferable players?
Lautaro wants 10 mil and inter is offering 8 at most, yet all they talk about is how much money Milan would want for their top players this summer, and painting a picture that there would be a fire sale. They are not guessing every day which player inter needs to sell just so they can be in compliance with FFP and lower their debt.

      1. And Milan books are in order with no debt, yet every day they write as it’s a foregone conclusion that one of Theo, Leao or Maignan, or all 3, are getting sold this summer.
Inter went to the UCL final last season and still sold 2 starters in Onana and Brozovic. Winning the scudetto doesn’t bring enough money for inter to fix their financial problems and they could be out in UCL this round to Atletico Madrid. It’s not guaranteed that they are going back to the final and collecting all that money.

      2. LOL 450M in debt says differently – no matter what success they have on the pitch. Even if the win everything this year, that would still only cover 40-50% of their debt without including accumulated interest on that debt.

      3. Until they win this scudetto Inter have had as much success on the pitch as we have in the last 5 years, namely one scudetto each. Yes, they went to the CL final, but they didn’t win it, and we went to the semi-final in the same season. Not much more success than us. I don’t care for the Coppa Italia or Supercoppa. And they definitely sell/let go of some of their best players. See Lukaku, Onana, Brozovic, Skrinniar, etc.

      4. Martinez hasn’t signed that new contract. They can’t afford him right now. They’ll sell one or two key players this season to try and recoup money that can be used to pay off their debt. The smart money is on Martinez, and possibly Barella. If they can find a buyer for ‘the best midfielder in Europe'(TM) Hakan, then they’ll sell. Once Beppe Marotta is gone, they’ll have nothing.

The only thing that will save Inter now, is if the Chinese government suddenly allow Suning to spend money, or they’re bought over by an oil club. Otherwise, they’re going into the same situation Milan did when the club defaulted on their loans. No amount of titles, domestic or otherwise, is going to stop that.

    1. I think because they know right now milan fans are scare of selling while inter trust the process after seing work season after season, every year a trophy with inzaghi. Also we know inter is selling right now? Dumphries probably is getting sold that’s why they got the canadian.

      1. Dembele is a left winger who can play equally well on the right too, just like Pulisic.
He played at Dortmund as a left winger, Barca sighed him to replace Neymar at the left wing, last season he played on the left opposite Raphinha on the right. He only plays on the right at PSG and France NT to accommodate Mbappe, just like Pulisic with Leao.

  3. There was a great 15 min piece.on The Italian Football Podcast on Leao. Really thought provoking about how players develop and where he is.
