Leao’s father reveals he ‘loves being in Italy’ but mentions Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid

By Oliver Fisher -

The father of Rafael Leao has confirmed that talks are on over the renewal of his son’s contract, though he did mention three other clubs as part of his response.

Now that football has stopped because of the break for the World Cup, speculation has been ramped up regarding the future of some of Milan’s key players and there are arguably none more important than Leao, who was last season’s Serie A MVP and has continued his excellent form.

Antonio Leao – Rafael’s father – gave an interview to the Portuguese newspaper Record in which he spoke about the negotiation with Milan for the renewal of his son’s contract, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“We are working on it. Until the deadline of 2024 we will take care of everything, without necessarily Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid,” he said.

“He loves being in Italy. He has a predilection for Italians, the one the Portuguese do not have for him. He won the award for best player of the last Serie A not because he was beautiful, but simply… because he is the best.”

Based on various reports, it seems that main crux of the negotiations is centred around the compensation owed to Sporting CP jointly with Lille and the request for a big pay rise to reflect Leao’s development since joining.

  1. The best? His dad loves him to much, he’s overrated and I would sell him for 90m for sure. It’s on/off with him the whole season now, our team need reinforcements so please don’t let him walk away for free

  2. I can agree with a comment. Milan already lost competitiveness in Serie A. Due to Kessie and Romagnoli leave, and no proper summer signing. If they dont reach agreement soon, he should be sold for best price. Without Leao Milan can secure 4th position and with Leao Will be difficult to won anything due to schedule and other teams. If Milan doesnt have finance balance to compete with top club, then must sell expensive and not chep one year before running contract. Management seems lost in part of the contracts players, and every one needs to understand contract revenue for player is like club revenue from commercial. Rise revenue from TV, commercial, matchday. Do something new, positive for the club.

  3. Yeah , he gone!
The only question is, would the new ownership step in and tell Maldini to sell him while they still can or allow Maldini to continue “negotiating ” for 18 more months and let him leave for free

  4. One thing is for sure we are in some real messy situation…..he won’t sign with us unless we met his conditions and when his father is involved well than player will won’t matter contrary what we always hear from our management….now when he should be sold jan or june…..because a person with a limited football knowledge would know by now where its all heading…….

  5. Leao’s father is basically use the same PUA tacitics as Dollarboy and Kessie: he loves Milan and feels loved in Italy and would love to stay on, blah, blah…

It’s time to sell him to get some decent investment$$$ back, otherwise we’ll lose again by dragging on with this contract negotiation.

Hope Maldini & Co will not fall the same trap again.

    1. It’s not feasible to sell though – any sensible agent should advise him to stay until he’s a free agent and talk to all parties to find the best deal. And he can’t be sold without agreement. Why would he let Chelsea or whoever pay 70m euros for him when he could wait a year and get 35m of that for himself?

  6. No one talks about this but Milan should start adding a clause in player contracts that guarantees them a portion of the transfer fees. The trend across the top 5 leagues is to leave for free. Teams need to find ways to incentivize players to not leave for free or it will become the norm very soon.

  7. I don’t like this guys tone from the interview, he seems to be very forward but I’ll let time do it’s thing with this one.
Personally I’d love Rafa to as I love the idea of having someone actually feared in our attack. Plus when Ibra and Oli retire the young striker will integrate well with him and we all ride into the Milan sunset together lol…. But as I said, it’s just an idea. In the real world, I really don’t want agents, dads, uncles, wives, or anyone holding us by the balls and demanding ransom anymore.
I’m tired of that, Atagana and Raiola were enough to last me a lifetime.
I really would like a more ruthless approach when it comes to us signing players in future, for example look at that Chelsea tactic of inserting a 1 year extension on the contract if the club wishes to do so. I think that’s a brilliant way to protect yourself to some degree.
We all love M&M for sure, but I think it’s time we see them also turning up the heat a bit, cause all these agents/dads do it to them the entire blaty time!! We need to protect ourselves now.
Anyway if we sell Rafa for more than 90 minimum I’ll be happy for the money. I’ll wish him well, and he’ll be just another former Milan player- ultimately we’ve lost more established stars and somewhat survived.
I really would like for Bennacer to renew however, that boy( I believe) would be extremely difficult to replace compared to Rafa. Let’s see…. Forza Milan
