Rafael Leao has fueled the officiating controversy on Instagram with a couple of stories, highlighting a previous incident that went against AC Milan.
Milan’s unbeaten run came to an end this evening as Parma scored the only goal at San Siro. It was a rather controversial goal, however, as Mike Maignan was ‘screened’ by an opponent and Davide Bartesaghi felt he was beaten unfairly in the aerial duel.

After a long VAR check, lasting for a few minutes, the referee decided to allow the goal after initially disallowing it. Naturally, the Rossoneri weren’t happy with the decision and the reactions have been that the situation didn’t even warrant a VAR check, seeing as it wasn’t a clear error.
Leao has fueled the controversy with two stories on his Instagram tonight, first showing the goal Milan had disallowed against Sassuolo (for a non-existent foul) and then tonight’s goal. In other words, he believes that if the Sassuolo incident was a foul, then it was definitely a foul on Bartesaghi.
There is no doubt that the officiating has been too inconsistent in Serie A this season and that is what has made everything more frustrating. Ultimately, however, tonight Milan have themselves to blame for not scoring before the incident.

I honestly can’t remember the details of the goal ruled out against Sassuolo.
However I couldn’t see any strong reason to rule out the Parma goal tonight. The blocks that Parma defenders put on Maignan were not illegal. They created a trap and then just held their positions and Mike just gave up.
Leao seems more focussed on the jump on Bartesaghi. It was a fair jump and he just took hold of the better position. Bartesaghi was too late and missed the chance to compete for the ball.

Yes the goal was very sus, but we are Milan. That was our fault for not scoring any goal. With Allegri tactic and no real striker, scoring even one goal became hard. Against a strong team that loves to attack, we can expect more since Allegri is defensive expert, and we can do a counter attack. But against a team with 11 players in their own half, we will much struggle. So lets be objective Scudetto Race is finished, runner up we must fight for it.
If we go by the 2 images leao posted, then it should not be a goal. The parma player leaned heavily on the Milan player pinning him to the ground. If the sassuolo goal was disallowed for a less evident push on the player, why was this one allowed?
However, I think the players should play with the mindset that the referee is biased against them. So you either add more theatrics to your fall or attempted tackle like everybody does or STAND YOUR GROUND AND CONTEST EVERY BALL. DO NOT ASSUME THE REFEREE WILL BLOW IN YOUR FAVOR.
As a former defender, i considered it an insult to have a striker out jump me, or jump unimpeded in our airspace. We were taught to contest the ball, jump with the opponent, collide with him, throw him off his intended trajectory . That gives him less time to put power or direction on his header. I don’t know what these guys are taught in training.
Bartesaghi is over 1.9m tall, he should have attempted a jump OR FALL THEATRICALLY. it seems if you don’t exergerate actions, you don’t get fouls called for you.
But the standard is, would maldini or baresi or desailly have allowed you to jump freely without disturbing your flight in some way? Will they fall, roll over and moan on the floor like a sissy? No, they would not. The standards have fallen.
The truth remains that, if we were 2-0 up,this goal would not have mattered. We should have done the job earlier.
Allegri wishes to copy the era of capello when Milan won matches with 1-0 margins and conceded 13 goals all season. But Tomori is no Tassoti.
It’s a waste of time to discuss the tactics or suitability of round players in square holes, leao & co. Allegri ain’t changing his spots anytime soon. He will do the barest minimum to stay in the top 4, while getting all the benefits of Napoli losing and being 4 points ahead of the closest chasing pack. That is evident in Milan’s playing pattern of inviting pressure and starting to play AFTER going behind with minutes to go, then we see an urgency to string passes together.
On thing is clear though, a team is being favored, cos I saw some data online and inter have collected the least red cards over the past 5 years! That says something cos they are no saints and we see how they play.
Yeah why do Bastoni get favorable call last time? It’s because he act in an exaggerated way that the referee judgement is impeded, I’m not sure whether to blame Bastoni because all players would take advantage of it these days, so that blame should have been on a referee who fall for it. Unfortunately Barthesaghi is still young and naive on this. As you said the standard has been declining these days.
As if Leao doesn’t know how sh*t the refereeing is in Serie A. Come on man.
We should be looking in the mirror and reflecting on our pathetic performances this season. We’ve dropped countless points against bottom‑of‑the‑table teams. We’re vulnerable on defensive set pieces, too slow shifting between zones, unable to break down tight blocks, and barely creating clear‑cut chances. Yet somehow the focus is on referees instead? The game should have been sealed by the time the referee made that mistake yesterday. Pathetic.
