GdS: Leao hoping to be a leader in the derby and silence talk over future

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao is getting ready for yet another Milan derby but there are already some speculating whether it could be his last, given the doubts over his future.

Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) focuses on Leao who has not yet renewed his contract with Milan, but looks ahead to Sunday’s game against Inter hoping to be just as decisive as he was in the first league meeting this season.

The winger would be the first to admit that his most recent appearances have not been up to par, which admittedly is the case for the whole team, and while the public statements continue to reiterate that his career with the Rossoneri is not over there are still some obstacles to overcome.

With his contract expiring in 2024 there are two options to choose: a renewal or a transfer in the summer. To renew, the release clause situation must be resolved (currently at €150m), the relations between the agents and the €19m fine owed to Sporting CP.

Leao has appeared smiling in training these days and has also posted on social media showing himself as a true leader. First a photo together with Adli, giving him some advice (‘the important thing is to stay focused ‘), then a photo of the Curva Sud outside Milanello with a banner saying ‘Come on mister, come on guys. United for the good of Milan’.

Despite the difficult period that the team is going through, Leao has appeared calm in recent days and on Sunday he must show everyone just why he is always the hot topic.
