MN: Leao close to extending with Milan as he and Mendes battle €16.5m sentence

By Oliver Fisher -

There is a delay regarding the renewal of Rafael Leao despite the fact that an agreement is close because of a sentence against the forward, a report claims.

MilanNews confirms that the Portuguese international is negotiating the extension of his contract with Milan and the parties are close. The 22-year-old wants to stay at Milan and the feeling is that an agreement will be found, but there is another issue that occupies Leao’s mind and that is the one with Sporting Lisbon.

Leao left Sporting when ultras broke into the training ground and attacked some players, and the latest sentence handed down on the case relating to his unilateral termination of the contract condemned him to pay €16.5m to the Lisbon club.

This is an enormous figure for one player to be on the hook for, so that triggered an appeal to the TAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). The Swiss court are conciliatory in nature so Rafa and Jorge Mendes expect a more positive mediation on the amount of compensation.

  1. Milan should offer to pay half of it as a part of his contract extension. That is what a real club does, support the players that want to stay and play for Milan.

    1. There’s nothing to pay. He had to do so because his old club didn’t follow their obligations to protect their staff members from some fanatic psychos. The Lisbon club would terminate contract on their side if those ultras had injured him heavily. He didn’t left the club just because he wanted to do so. He did it because he couldn’t do his work.
I even think it is Lisbon club should pay him for putting his life on risk and not providing proper security.
Obviously AC Milan should cover court expenses and provide good lawyers until the case resolves. So the boy can focus only on doing what he is best at.

  2. Also note this must be affecting him psychologically. So, it’s a double whammy. I can’t wait for this period of free departure drama, injuries and this Leao legal thing to be over. Enough with the side shows. It’s hard enough as it is on the pitch.
