CorSport: Leao’s Milan renewal not expected until after World Cup

By Euan Burns -

Rafael Leao’s new AC Milan is not expected to be agreed upon until after the 2022 Qatar World Cup, a report claims.

As has been reported by Corriere dello Sport today (via Calciomercato.com), the Rossoneri are now not expecting to make any major breakthrough in the negotiations with the Portuguese star until after the tournament in the Middle East has passed.

There were hopes that the deal would be wrapped up, at least in principle, before the player leaves to represent Portugal at the World Cup.

The main reason given as to why that hasn’t happened is the complicated legal situation around Leao’s move from Sporting CP to Lille before he became a Milan player.

The Portuguese club feels that the player owes them money and the open dispute makes it very hard for the Rossoneri to find a financial agreement with the player and his entourage. It is a saga that is set to continue.

  1. Is anyone going to be surprised if Leao doesn’t sign any contract until after Euro 2024, when he will leave on a free transfer for double than what Milan is offering.
We have seen this movie before.
Either pay the man or sell him in January 2023, so you can get the most money in return while you still have leverage to be able to adequately replace him.
Set a deadline, and if nothing is agreed by then, Milan and Leao should go their separate ways.
You can’t keep losing your best players on a free transfers

    1. 100% this. Should have done it this summer, TBH and signed…Kvaratskhelia. I think we’re going to be watching the movie again. He won’t be sold in January because that will put even CL qualification at risk. I expect he will be sold at bargain basement prices (~40-50m) in the summer. Oh well.

      1. Rebic should have been sold in the summer when his ex
Frankfurt coach wanted him in Freiburg and used that money to buy Kvara. With Kvara Milan would have had better back up for Leao, also someone who would push Leao to a higher playing level and be a security in case Leao is sold.

      2. I don’t think he’ll be sold because it’s not in the player’s interest. If he waits one more year then that 40m goes into his pocket and not Milan’s.

    2. Milan are not going to wait until 2024, if Leao doesn’t renew, he’ll be sold at the end of the season. Even with only a year left, both Chelsea and Man City will pay over €100 million for him.

      1. That’s not realistic, sir.
Chelsea needed Leao this summer and only offered Milan around 70 mil for him. They already have an agreement with Christopher Nkunku for next summer. Why would they offer 100 mil next summer when they won’t need Leao anymore, and he will only have a year left on his contract, and they know that Milan must sell.
Milan will be lowballed by any team interested in Leao.
ManCity also has no desperate need of Leao, to come in and overpay for him.
Plus there are only few clubs that can afford to spend 100 mil on a player and almost all are covered in Leao’s position .
        Milan will have no leverage

        1. Man City have Grealish on the left, he’s garbage. Every big team apart from Real Madrid need an upgrade on the left. PSG are also interested in Leao. Mane and Lewandowski went for over €50 million despite having a year left. We’ll get over €100 million for Leao if he leaves.

  2. We will be a laughing stock of Italy if we let this guy leave for free aswell. We will have a big problem of we don’t, honestly Leao is a difficult one with his fine but Bennacer’s low ball contract is honestly the most poor. 3M for a fantastic player where other teams so his talent. If those owners only want small salary’s and don’t pay the good players the salary’s they deserve they need to so it, then the fans can know that we need to think about Europa league the coming years

    1. We will be the laughing stock of Europe. And if this happens I will join the ranks calling for a change of the Maldini/Massara team. Perhaps Giuntoli will be available?

      1. It this happens imo it isn’t enough to put Maldini out but it he also doesn’t give Benny his contract he and his team 100% needs to go. But it all starts with owners, they don’t seem to care about us tbh, it’s all nice talk but they like a young Milan. So don’t expect anything big salary wise

  3. Always have this feeling this renewal was not gonna happen and it has started to follow the script. He should be put for sale during/after the World Cup.
As harsh as it sounds ACMilan first and if an acceptable proposal is put on the table…. Only Leao can decide. Good luck to all parties. Lets watch this show.

  4. This article should just say “Leao’s Milan renewal not expected”

If it was going to happen, it would have happened by now – he’s leaving for free as that’s the best way for him to cash in; any sane agent would advise this with 18 months left.

    1. C’mon @Mehdi.
Milan was connected with Kvara during last year summer Mercato while he was still playing for Rubin Kazan. Don’t forget it was touch and go with Leao. Milan was very close to giving up on him.
Kvara was recommended to Milan by Kaladze. His price was above 25 mil at the time, too much for Milan, but after UEFA allowed foreign players in the Russian league to be freed from their contracts and sign with whoever they want, he went back home to Georgia.
Even at that point fans were calling for Milan to take advantage of the situation and sign him before he went home.
That’s why his price was so low this summer .
So yeah we knew very well who he was prior to this season

  5. Ako izgubimo Leaa i Benasera Milan če izgubit mogučnost da zadrži i ostale . To če bit početak kraja i dogodine smo kandidati za seriju B

  6. Milan’s mercato and renewals department are a joke, frankly. No foresight, poor recruitment choices. The team is actually weaker than it was this time last year despite the scudetto win.
