GdS: Leao’s renewal put on pause as appeal verdict over €16.5m sentence is awaited

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao’s renewal is currently on pause because of the sentence that he is looking to overturn regarding a payment to former club Sporting CP, a report claims.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan), the Rossoneri are keen to reward Leao with a contract extension and a pay rise given his explosion this season as he hit double figures in goals on Sunday netting the winner against Sampdoria. Talks between Paolo Maldini, Frederic Massara and agent Jorge Mendes are ongoing, but there is a hurdle to jump first.

That is because the verdict of the TAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) in Lausanne is awaited on the issue involving Leao and Sporting Lisbon. In 2018, Leao terminated his contract along with other players due to Sporting ultras storming the training ground.

The Lisbon Court sided with Sporting in their most recent ruling, sentencing Leao to compensate the Lusitanian club a fee of €16.5m. The entourage of the Portuguese forward first want to wait for the verdict of the TAS – who they appealed to – to understand in what financial situation he will find himself. The story will be clearer within a couple of weeks, therefore.

  1. Wtf 10 or even more players left sporting that day and only leao has to pay?? Nobody wanna play for team where ultras can join training and beat players

  2. Stalling tactic from his agents while they scout out who is really interested in signing him and for how much, hope I’m wrong big time, we can build a very strong team around him and the likes of Theo, tonali, maignan, Calabria, tomori etc

    1. If that’s the case, then we can at least sell him for a good price. Although I don’t want him to leave this summer because we have other priorities such a cb, a dm, a rw and a cf and replacing Leao will make things much more difficult. Plus that would be too many changes in our first 11 which not healthy for our consistency.

  3. I can’t believe the courts are penalizing him after he was attacked at his place of work. Such bs, I hope the club is helping him with the legal fees as a sign of good faith.
