Record: Big twist in Leao renewal talks as Lille will pay full €20.3m fine

By Oliver Fisher -

A report has emerged from Portugal this morning suggesting that Rafael Leao’s renewal could be about to get an awful lot simpler.

The newspaper Record are making the bold claim that Lille will take in the full payment of the fine owed to Sporting CP after the unilateral termination of the contract on the part of the player in the summer of 2018 after the attack on the training ground by ultras of the Lisbon club.

According to Record, Lille will take full responsibility for the total €20.3m (€16.5m in compensation plus €3.8m in interest) following an appeal before the Swiss Federal Court which they lost, which confirmed the ruling made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

If this news is confirmed, Leao will no longer be deprived of 20% of his annual salary which is currently deducted from him as a sum to be paid to Sporting towards the fine.

Lille signed Leao on a free transfer on 1 August 2018 as they were convinced that they would never have had to compensate Sporting but the decision of the TAD (Portuguese court) changed the scenario.

This would of course drastically change the situation in relation to Leao’s renewal, as the fine would no longer be overhanging in the negotiations which could continue more serenely.

    1. Your comment make no sense, why would anyone care if they agree? Imagine how many criminals there would be if you could just disagree with the judge x)

    2. @IKWYDLS Lille lost on an appeal in court. They have no choice but to pay legally whether to agree or not. They lost on appeal. It’s over for Lille is this story is true.

  1. That’s great news for Leao.
I just wonder will it be good for Milan?
It also makes his purchase by another club a lot more straightforward and cheaper

  2. I always failed to see how this is impacting the renewal in any way. Seems to me like just excuses.

Clubs will pay him as much as they deem worth, and he will choose the best offer, as every player does. No company will give him more money because he owes money.

    1. People feel sorry for rich footballers who need help with their bills!
This is how the world is. If you owe millions, you get a deal. If you owe thousands, you go to jail

      1. Yeah I get the point, but still…

If some club (lets say PSG) is willing to pay him 20M signing bonus, then suddenly he is going to not take it, because now he doesn’t have a financial obligation? Or is the assumption that now PSG is not going to offer this signing bonus?

I just don’t get how this impacts the negotiation. At the end of the day the club is willing to offer what it is willing to offer and Leao’s agent will negotiate the higest possible offer, regardless of his fine.

Do people think that he will now settle for lower salary (than he could get elsewhere) or not want a signing/renewal bonus?

Yeah. Every man is equal but rich people are more equal than the rest. 🙂
