CorSport: Leao makes salary demands clear to Milan amid heavy weight of fine

Rafael Leao has made his salary demands clear in negotiations with AC Milan over a renewal but they are influenced by one big factor, according to a report.

According to what Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) are reporting today, Leao is asking Milan for no less than €7-7.5m net per season in order to extend his contract beyond the current deadline of June 2024.

The main reason for this is that the Portuguese winger has to contribute to a €19m fine jointly owed with Lille to Sporting CP after he terminated his contract with them back in 2018, with the ensuing legal battle having seen a ruling in favour of the Lisbon club.

Leao is looking for guarantees that he will earn an amount which will subsequently allow him to repay the fine, without which it is difficult to find an agreement and thus sign a new contract. The paper claims things are currently at a ‘stalemate’ because of this.

      1. One could add Bakayoko to the list too as he refuses to leave Milan no matter what. Either he loves the club so much or enjoys getting a huge salary for watching the matches in the best seats.

    1. What does that even mean? It’s business. Don’t be surprised if Theo asks for 7M a season next year as he continues to grow and become one of that best, if not the best, LB in the world. Would he still have “Milan in his heart” if he asked for that $$ and we said no and he left???? Same w Tonali? Sport is a business. Gone are the days of Maldini, Totti, etc..where one player stays at his club for his entire career. Same as in everyday life. Hardly anyone stays w the same company for 30 years any longer then retires. Just doesn’t happen anymore. You get a better offer where another company will double or triple your salary – you leave. Or your company finds someone who can do your job for half your salary – they fire you and hire the cheaper guy. It’s life. Not saying I agree w it but that’s the reality today. Not fair to hold football players to higher or different standard than others just because you are emotionally attached to a football club. Nor is it fair to blame the player of the club can’t afford fair market value and that player leaves. No man should tell another man what he should or should not earn or where he should and should not work. That’s each mans decision and whether we like it or not that should be respected.

      1. Don’t have to worry about Theo until 2024😬. But yes, his next contract renewal will probably be impossible. Hopefully the lesson will FINALLY be learned and he gets sold for max value in the summer of 2024. Enjoy Theo for another 1.5 seasons. But ugh, OK, we’re getting ahead of ourselves here.

    2. What? You would play at Milan for free and with a huge debt over your head. His wages need to cover his life, and he has to repay the fine. Don’t be ridiculous, this is not a fairy tale, but real world…

      1. I would in fact play at Milan for free. And let’s not kid ourselves… Leao isn’t playing in Milan “for free”. He’s a millionaire already.

        1. You know nothing @bb as usual. Ya you would play at Milan for free lol. Easy for a fan to say. No player would do that. Would you continue to work at your job inspecting pigs a$$holes for free or would you demand that $1.34/hr you currently make?? LMAO. Easy for others to judge but we are not in his shoes and do not know what obligations he has or doesn’t have. Grow up kid – this is business. Comments like that just show you are a little fan boy who has no concept of the real world. “I would play for free” LOL. Ya ok buddy.

          1. LOL, you just proved you know nothing. 🙂

I have enough money to support me & my family for a few years even with no income.

“Easy for others to judge but we are not in his shoes and do not know what obligations he has or doesn’t have.”
Obligations? Such as child support? LOL. You and your bedtime stories. Obligations. LOL.

  1. 7M is worth it to keep Leao, or just renew the contract then sell next summer otherwise his price will go down significantly. Leao will improve and even his price will

  2. I bet management is calculating. If Leao doesnt win scudetto, he Will be sold, if they achieved scudetto goal, they might give him big deal. Problem of player salary is problem of winning revenues.

  3. To be fair these days there are no more Maldini, Toti, Gerrard….players who chose the Jersey than money. Milan is not able to keep Leao and that is the reality. Better sell him in January and by miracles we will find good players if not we will loose him for free

  4. The issue isnt Maldini. Its the ownership for not giving him the proper funds to sign Leao. Maldini knows the game and would gladly give Leao the money the problem is. He doesnt have it.

  5. Also there are suddenly no real suitors for Leao, as Chelsea have signed Nkunku and Madrid have just spent 60m on 16 year old Enderick (WTF?). So that leaves who? Man U? I guess they may be able to offer a big salary, but that club is fvcked. I guess this works to our advantage.

  6. He plainly deserves this salary, no matter what the ridiculous claque of Leão haters’ says.

Come on, Ibra was earning more or less the same in his last contract and he was offering – let’s be honest here – a lot less to the side, an embarrassing dud like Bakayoko gets half that amount from Milan… well, no need to say more.

  7. It looks like he has a tootache… He’s gonna ask the club for dentist expenses too!
