GdS: Saved by the goal – Leao’s ‘two-faced’ performance vs. Genoa

AC Milan had Rafael Leao to thank last night, as he scored the equalising goal late on. However, it was not one of his finest games in the shirt.

Given the expectations placed on Leao, the scrutiny on his performances is extremely high. However, he is just returning from an injury, and he is still not 100% ready for action. So, a bit of leeway must be given. After all, he is not going to be at his best just yet.

Leao struggles, but…

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that, right now, he is not in the best of form. Despite playing for 90 minutes, his impact on the wider game was minimal and Massimiliano Allegri confirmed as much when speaking to the media after the game.

As MilanNews relays, the Portuguese was ‘imprecise, ineffective and unamusing’ for most of the game, which is probably slightly harsh. However, his goal was needed and when it mattered, he scored a goal.

We dream that stars will always be visible, and in an ideal world, they always are. However, considering he is not at 100%, if he can only shine briefly, when it matters most in games, then for now, that is more than enough.

Gazzetta writes that without the goal, the outlook on his performance would be much different. The word ‘if’ does a lot of heavy lifting. Whilst he was not perfect, he was still decisive. Ultimately, that is what matters.

  1. I’m sorry. Yes, I give credit for the goal. But the team needs players to fulfill all of their role. What is the effect on the offense when your main offensive player is not creating or moving the offense along. I’ve also said this about Pulisic. A goal does not completely save a poor over all performance. Ask yourself, would the offense have produced more if a player who didn’t do much played better. Football is a sport where you need all the players working together and at their top level to really be successful. A weak link breaks the flow of the team Yes, I understand he is injured – I’m not sure he should have been on the field.

This. Otherwise Messi would have 3 World Cup titles and 20 UCL championships.

  2. a win for Milan should be a collective responsibility, just a reminder of what a striker should do.
A striker scores goal and defender should defend well and ensure no goal is conceded.
Leao is a striker and he scores that’s a pass mark, do you prefer he plays well to your expectation and the end product is missing?
what happens if your strikers don’t score? will you win or loose?
are the midfielders performing to capacity? are they linking well with the strikers? are they visionary enough to spot the strikers when they run into space?
Cut Leao some slacks he is not 100% yet he delivers, that’s all that matters

    1. Strikers link up play and create situations of danger with passing. Strikers also defend the initial passes out of the back. So yes, I think there is more to being a 9 then just goals. Watch Kaine or Haarland. Remember that guy Giroud and all he did for the team besides scoring goals They do more then just score goals.

    1. I am not getting on him for this game as he’s injured. Sometimes poor play is excused with a goal. A winning team has all players working as a group.

    2. He’s one of the laziest players I’ve ever seen in my life. I can’t watch him! And people still praise him because he makes 3 rapid runs like a headless chicken to lose his ball afterwards
