GdS: Leao’s requests to renew emerge – the Champions League can help Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Shortly after Clement Turpin blew the full-time whistle on Wednesday night, Rafael Leao could be seen under the travelling fans leading the celebrations after progression to the quarter-finals of the Champions League was secured.

As pointed out by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) this morning, getting into the final eight of European club football’s top competition is worth about €20m in extra revenues for Milan, which shows just how important the income generated is in the scheme of the club’s project.

The management now know that they should have a bit more financial leeway when it comes to making decisions on the future of the squad, with the likes of Olivier Giroud and Brahim Diaz still to have their futures resolves, but the most important is Rafael Leao.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are working tirelessly to find a solution in the midst of many obstacles. The will of the player shouldn’t be one of the problems as the Portuguese forward has always declared that he wants to stay at the Rossoneri, where he feels happy and where he knows he can still grow a lot.

Contacts between the parties slowed down in January due to differences of views within Leao’s entourage, but talks have restarted positively over the last week and now the directors know Leao’s requests.

The 23-year-old wants a five-year deal worth €7.5m net per season and a €2m signing bonus. The biggest knot remains the Sporting CP fine and for this reason Maldini and Massara would like to speak with Gerry Cardinale to understand how to approach it.

  1. If that was also include the 20M fine which means he will earns 11,5M per year, that was ridiculous imo as he’s definitely not worth that much of salary and i would prefer to us selling him in the summer.

  2. sell for 150m or
let him sit in the stands all next year
    thinks he is messi
    just another punk
1 good year and comes with demanda

    1. “sell for 150m”

Why not for 250M€? Or 350M€? Oh right, NO ONE would pay such figures. No club in the world would pay +100M€ for a player whose contract is running out next year.

  3. i’d give him 5M and bonuses up to 8M.
1M if he gets 20+ goals,
half a mill for cup trophy,
half a mill for 11+ assists,
1M if they land the scudeto
1M for champions or europe league…
    idk seems fair 😀

    1. Bruh. Remind me to call you if I ever need a negotiator😂😂😂 Better yet, Milan should adopt this incentive based approach in negotiations. Fair but firm. It’ll unlock potential we didn’t even know some player had. I’d wager Salemaekers will be a ballon d’or candidate on a contract like this..😂😂

  4. “Working tirelessly” – what the hell does that mean? Pay the man or find a buyer. They’ve been working on it tirelessly for 18 months now.

  5. You keep repeating “The will of the player shouldn’t be one of the problems” but the will of the player is to keep requesting more money. If the will of the player was to stay, he could have agreed any of the offers made to him so far. Especially as someone who hasn’t been very convincing in games since November.

This is identical to the Donnarumma and Kessie sagas and the sooner everyone grows up and accepts that next year is his final year in a Milan shirt the better.

  6. I wish Rafa had Diaz’s determination !! Wish he would come deep as often as brahim does and I wish he would run around like a mad guy( that’s what Brahim does) , pressing and fighting for every ball as if his life depend on it…
I think Milan should keep Rafa, he’s got talent and he lacks mentality .. mentality can be achieve easier than talent !!
I’m sure that next season he will play better, he would surely realise that this kind of football will not help him become a better player, I think its the MVP that’s making him play like this

  7. Leao is definitely not worth 7.5 mil per year but it is still better to sign him for that amount because if we don’t then we will get another ‘promising’ player at his position for 35 milion euros transfer fee and n top of that 3 or 4 million in wages per year. So, it turns out Leao for 7.5 million is cheap! I don’t want to see another De Ketelare at Leaos position.

  8. All Milan contracts needs to insert a clause that allows the club to have an automatic right to renew for 1 more year at an agreed salary. This could prevent deadlocks like these to happen
