L’Equipe journalist Nabil Djellit has shed some light on rumours linking AC Milan with Florian Thauvin and Memphis Depay.
The Rossoneri have been heavily linked with a move for Thauvin over the past few weeks as the Marseille winger will be available on a free transfer at the end of the current season as things stand.
Djellit spoke to PianetaMilan about the situation surrounding the Frenchman and the chances of him potentially making the move to the San Siro.
“Florian Thauvin is a player who is at the end of his contract and is increasingly likely to leave at the end of the season. The negotiations for the renewal between him and the club are not at all well advanced because Olympique Marseille does not have the money to satisfy the footballer’s economic request,” he said.
“And then Thauvin can take advantage of the situation in which he finds himself today to make an agreement with a free transfer club, which allows him to receive a great signing bonus and an interesting salary.
“There is a lot of talk about him in Italy where Napoli and Milan are interested but also Spain, where the player is linked to Sevilla. But in my opinion there is a very good chance that he will go to Milan next summer.
“Thauvin’s deal will expire in June and Milan seem willing to aim above all because they don’t have to shell out a euro for his transfer fee. And then also for the player the Milan option would be seized on the fly. In my eyes, Milan are the most interested suitor for the player.”
Discussion then switched to Kylian Mbappé, a player who has been occasionally linked with a move to Milan but often in stories accompanying his move with a potential takeover bid from French multi-billionaire Bernard Arnault.
As a child he supported Milan (among other teams) because they had his great idol Robinho, but is it really impossible to see him at Milan one day?
“I don’t think Mbappè will go to Milan in the short or short term. But if in a few years Milan will make a comeback at European level, who knows. Milan remains a legendary club in the world of football and the Rossoneri shirt is known and famous all over the world. But the trend is that Kylian will either stay at PSG or go to Real Madrid. Or at Liverpool.
“The only Italian club that could attract Mbappè at the moment is Juve, which has been dominating for a very long time but I don’t think we will see him in Italy in the next few years.”
Another Ligue 1 star in Memphis Depay has been linked to Milan in the past couple of windows as his contract will also expire at the end of the season. What chance do Milan have to sign him? His compatriot Ronald Koeman and Barcelona are also apparently keen…
“I know that Depay wanted to go to Milan two years ago. From what I know, Memphis really likes Milan and loves the city of Milan, being a very ‘fashion’ guy who likes fashion. And Milan as we know is the capital of fashion. Like Thauvin, Depay has his contract expiring at the end of the season.
“Whoever takes him will make a big hit and hears more and more insistence of a probable landing at Barcelona with which he was already in talks during the last market session. Depay is liked by many clubs and offers will certainly not be lacking, even from England.
“With a good project and an important economic offer Depay could also go to Milan, especially if the Rossoneri qualify for the Champions League. And then if they win the Scudetto Milan will have even more appeal in their eyes. So his arrival at Milan cannot be completely excluded.”
