L’Equipe: Maldini exit forces Maignan to reflect on Milan future amid Chelsea interest

By Isak Möller -

Mike Maignan is one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and AC Milan are keen on renewing his contract, which will expire in 2026. However, the departure of Paolo Maldini has forced the goalkeeper to ponder.

Milan’s decision to sack both Maldini and Ricky Massara came as a shock to many, including the players, and Maignan was one of the players that published a photo on Instagram. As the caption, he wrote “SempreMilan” with a question mark over the i.

According to today’s edition of L’Equipe, as cited by Get French Football News, Maignan is unsure of his future. Chelsea have expressed their interest and Milan want to initiate talks over a renewal, but the latter currently isn’t the obvious choice for the goalkeeper.

The departure of Maldini, who brought in the goalkeeper from Lille in 2021, has forced Maignan to reflect on his own future. Milan will have to convince him with their project, helped by the fact that Rafael Leao just renewed his deal with the club.

    1. every milan fan should be a maldini lover as he is the player who played the most matches and won the most for the club and guided us to victories both as a player and in management as well but i nevertheless agree its speculation.
Anyone who hates maldini should be ashamed of themselves and shouldnt be considered as ac milan fans as maldini is a synonum for ac milan,

      1. “Anyone who hates maldini should be ashamed of themselves”

Wow. I doubt there ever has been a Milan-fan who would “hate Maldini”. People just OVERREACT to things.

        1. Well if that was the case then when he retired people should have kept quiet instead of ruining his farewell.

      2. I love him as a player. But not to the point that I will bash every rumours out there to the fault of new management.

If you read any of my comment before, youll see that I am actually sad by his departure and the way Milan treat him. But that’s it, we need to move on and keep supporting the club. Not bashing everything the club does by judging every rumours out there.

And the way some of the regular commenter here keep being so negative actually made me so sick of those comment.

Maldini is gone. Cardinale won’t, he and his group already bought Milan and they won’t sell it in foreseeable future. Any of you keep saying Cardinale out this cardinale out that won’t get what you want, so why not just wait and see? And not blaming every little thing to happen because no Maldini etc.

It’s not like everything Maldini did was right and he didn’t have any wrong. He is not a God (at least as director he isn’t), he isn’t always get the player he aim for. His decision isn’t always perfect.

        1. AR it wasnt meant as a jibe at you being a hater of him but i just stated if people hates maldini they shouldnt consider themselves milan fans as he is a synononm of the club and besides of that also agreed with your point of the maignan rumor simply being speculation.

Well i do actually agree with you here to some extent as i will keep my final judgement untill september 1rst but as things stands it looks rather bleak from my perspective.

      3. if you support Maldini over Milan you aint a Milan fan and should feel ashamed

Esp if you are wishing for Milan to fail next season and celebrating every negative rumor, why?

      4. @martin bernhard i often agree with your opinion but now i think you are follow bartolomeo path. Nobody hates maldini ,he is a legend as player. But i just hate ppl here that over react about his sacking and hoping AC Milan fall or saying AC Milan cannot signing any player in the world without maldini . There is no player bigger than AC Milan . Player become famous because play for AC Milan in the past not the opposite. Player, coach, director come and go in club are normal, life must go on . Who knows in future some billionaire in europe or middle east come to buy AC Milan and hire maldini again ?

        1. I dont hope we fail and as ive said several times in various posts i will keep my judgement for september 1rst,. Neither do i think maldini is above criticismn and neither is maldini bigger than ac milan which ive never said either or hinted at either,
But when that is said using the term milan lovers is negatively laddened as KWYDLS already pointed out further down the posts so why wouldnt i phrase myself as i did and i also said it wasnt even because i called ar hater i just made a simple statement taht people shouldnt consider themselves milans if they actually hates maldini and that wording i fully stand by as what i said is correct,

    2. The only fact we know for sure in all that story is Maignan’s own IG post with a question mark over “Sempre Milan”. Jump to your conclusion as media or other fans jump on theirs. Now let’s hope he will be convinced by whatever the project is these days.

    3. I believed you are just supporting Milan hence you don’t know why the milan fans loved maldini, he was sacked in the most rude manner , we re devastated..

      1. Please, I’m too old for this. I already support Milan since late 90’s, when Bierhoff was the big guy in front and Sheva just come and instantly become the capocannonieri.

I loved Maldini as a player, I liked what he did as director before last season, and I’m too sad by the way Milan treated him. That’s what we all feel. But that’s it!

No need to be over sentimental about it, player and manager comes and go, but the club will still there. Move on and focus on supporting the club, no need to be so negative on every single article about Milan, like some of us do here. That’s what I feel anyway, if any of you still think that I’m just a new fan etc etc then keep thinking what you want.

        1. AR but you wrote the first comment 😀 . Anyway, he is a bit over-dramatic, but he is also right in a way. If you hate Maldini you are not a real Milan fan. Of course you will still support Milan even after they sacked Maldini, but people are not going to watch cowards like Poli and Dejan write random nonsense because they are cowards and not comment. Get used to it.

        2. But why would u say Maldini lovers in a negative context as in your original comment when you yourself is a declared Maldini lover?

    4. True Maldini lovers want his signings (including Maignan) to continue to be successful with Milan, the club that Maldini will always love.

Fake Maldini lovers want the team that Maldini assembled in Milan to crumble and fail.

  1. Here they came the BS news saying that Magic Mike or Theo or even Tonali want to leave just to gets clicks on there news!

  2. Here we go again… I don’t know why it’s so hard for some people to wrap their heads around this… no one here is a “Maldini hater.” That’s about as logical as saying some Barcelona fans are “Messi haters.” What Maldini did on the pitch isn’t up for debate. What is up for debate are his business and people skills, if that’s alright with you guys.

    1. This! Someone with common sense. Labeling people “Maldini haters” just because they criticized Maldini’s post-football actions (that are up for debate surely) is ridiculous.

So if Messi murdered someone tomorrow, people should think it’s OK because he was the best player in the world? And those who don’t agree would be Messi-haters? Right?

      1. And no one here is “Maldini Lovers”. Just because some fans dislike the sacking of Maldini by Cardinale do not make them “Maldini Lovers”.

    2. Sure. The debate. So, can you tell me about the business aspect, how many players that won the scudetto last year were signed by M&M? How many that played in the semi-finals of CL? Explain, the business part that was so bad. Or, is it that classic story which I read in stupid comments. “No, Moncada signed him, Maldini signed only fails.” ?

They worked under a tight wage and transfer budget, I think what we got for that is perfect. And people keep writing that other clubs sell. Yes, they have 25 players + 15 on loan and they have players to sell. Milan’s team is usually filled up to 25 by 2-3 loans. We wouldn’t have a full team without loans, we don’t have spare players to sell.

    3. Man, that’s exactly the point: Maldini did very well overall as a manager also. Maignan’s (Leao, Tonali, Theo) stance is just a proof.
The environment he created is a proof of his skills, his personality and it is naive or unfair not to recognize all the benefits we enjoyed because of him. It’s naive to believe that the commitment of most of our players, the fact they stay despite (much) better offers was not because of Maldini.
And yes, he was not successful everywhere (e.g. sales, certain transfers) but overall his contribution as a manager was overwhelmingly positive.
That’s the debate. We fundamentally disagree on the assessment as manager.

  3. Forces? LOL, what a load of BS! It doesn’t “force” anything. Sh*t happens and people move on. Berlusconi died and the Earth is still rotating.

      1. That guy is being dramatic, but I think you are referring to me. You don’t even know what debate means, you just keep writing it and running away.

  4. Mike is now probably the best GK in the world right now, if he wants to go to a club to triple his wages, and have a good chance of winning the CL, i’m not sure his decision making would be affected if Maldini was here or not. It’s his career at stake.

Chelsea, Man UTD, Bayern – all need a new GK.

  5. – What Maldini did on the pitch isn’t up for debate. What is up for debate are his business and people skills, if that’s alright with you guys. –

    fair point, and i agree.
what annoys me is the way gerry treat him, not everything is about business

    1. I agree – maybe the sacking could’ve been handled better – but we don’t know what went on behind closed doors at that meeting. Despite what some soothsayers claim on here.
