Mattia Liberali may be one of the biggest recent ‘What If’s for AC Milan, given he seemed to be heading to the first team picture. However, it wasn’t to be.
In the summer of 2024, Liberali was one of the youngsters launched by Paulo Fonseca, and the Italian looked competitive. Indeed, it would not have been a surprise if he became a part of the first team picture shortly after.
Of course, being a starter may have been a step too far. Nevertheless, he certainly could’ve played somewhat of a role.
Instead, he slipped into the Futuro picture, and struggled to match the impact he showed in the summer. Then, in the summer, he parted ways with the club, heading to Catanzaro, where the Rossoneri retain a 50% future clause.
Liberali’s reflection
Today, he spoke about his move into the senior ranks that summer, and thanked a few members of the team, as Calciomercato.com relays from his words to Goal.
“Camarda and I talk often, we’ve had incredible experiences together. When I went with the first team, I had a hard time believing it, being at Milanello seemed like a dream: I felt like a kid in the playground.
“I will never stop thanking Fonseca, he gave me freedom and peace of mind, and those are two things that cannot be taken for granted. A player who helped me a lot was Florenzi, he took me under his wing.”
