Longoni: Abraham helps ‘excellent’ attack but defensive question marks remain

AC Milan scored four goals within the first 29 minutes of their game against Venezia last night, showcasing their strength up front. Tammy Abraham played a huge part in this, as Andrea Longoni highlights, but defensive question marks remain.

It was indeed a very strong performance by the Rossoneri and just what they needed ahead of the Liverpool and Inter games. Abraham got the chance from start and made things very difficult for Venezia with his pressing, while his teammates were very concrete in the final third.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, Longoni shared his thoughts on the game and above all praised the attack. It’s clear that there is excellent depth in this department but, having said that, question marks remain in the defensive phase.

“The approach and attitude were definitely better than the first three games. Good things were seen up front, with all the players on form: the attacking department has many excellent resources. Abraham had a great impact with his new shirt. Worth mentioning was a very good performance by Loftus-Cheek in midfield: great application and sacrifice from the Englishman.

“And finally, after a lifetime, we got a clean sheet: it must be said, however, that especially in the first half some occasions left a lot to be desired (considering the quality of the opponent). There is still a lot of work to be done at the back. Now Liverpool and Inter will say much more about this team and its chances,” he wrote.

Liverpool and Inter will certainly be the two litmus tests for Milan’s defence, with Paulo Fonseca hoping to find the best solutions moving forward. The key, as has been stated many times, will be to remain compact even under pressure.

    1. They might not have paid a transfer but they’re far from ‘free’.

Anyway, I’d argue the issue with our defence is more than the defenders, it’s the lack of midfield cover or proper DM role.
