Lombardy president pledges to help Milan build new stadium in San Donato quickly

By Oliver Fisher -

The president of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, has confirmed that AC Milan plan to press ahead with building a new stadium in San Donato.

As was outlined by La Gazzetta dello Sport recently, Milan’s plan is for a 65-70,000-seat stadium in the San Francesco area of San Donato to be completed by 2029 which would also include a number of other amenities such as bars and restaurants, officers and potentially the new club headquarters.

Milan and Inter initially launched a joint project to build a new stadium next to the current San Siro with Populous chosen over Manica to design it. Those plans fell apart, and now the Rossoneri are going with the latter as the designers for their own new home.

Fontana spoke during an interview with Radio Rossonera and shed some interesting light from his perspective regarding how serious Milan are about building a new home in the south east of the city.

“Milan are very determined in wanting to move forward with San Donato. The problems highlighted are about to be resolved. Soon we will have the official status of this choice,” he said.

“The Region is giving its contribution in the quickest possible time. We understand that speed is important for Milan. The club’s investment is something that will allow us [he is a Milan fan] to put ourselves on a par with the big European clubs.

“We are absolutely available to help Milan. All the area involved will have direct benefits thanks to the stadium project. I can’t give advance estimates on the timing, but they will be quick and compatible with the club’s needs.”

  1. I guess Sala is an Inter fan then, given how many years he’s been opposing Milan’s attempts to build a new stadium (going back to Berlusconi’s era).

    1. Is he not opposing Inter’s plans as well? It’s another topic, if they have ever had any stadium plans lol! But we presented our joint stadium plan, in 2019 that didn’t see the light of the day, Sala is a money fan.

    2. Both teams were very determined to go ahead with the “new san siro” joint project.
The municipal administration in the city proper screwed them equally with the delat tactics and the hardball attitude (an finalmy screwed themselves if inter also builds their own stadio in assago)
