Longari: ‘Not Furlani’s favourite’ – Conte hypothesis fades as Milan look abroad

By Euan Burns -

Antonio Conte looks unlikely to become the next AC Milan manager with CEO Giorgio Furlani not sold on the skills of the former Inter and Juventus man.

As reported by Gianluigi Longari to Radio Rossonera, Furlani is more keen on exploring other options beyond Conte for Stefano Pioli’s eventual successor.

It actually seems more likely now that Pioli will be staying at the club with form picking up and a year still to run on his contract, but names are still being linked.

As Longari explains, the main factors against Conte are that he will command a massive salary and big sums to be spent on established stars in the transfer market. He is viewed as a short-term success coach, rather than one to continue a project with.

That is not in line with the project at Milan and Furlani is therefore looking elsewhere. Longari mentions Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui as a more plausible alternative to Conte.

Another name to have consistently been linked with the job is Thiago Motta, who is currently in charge of Bologna. The poor form of Juventus under Massimiliano Allegri has meant that Motta is now heavily linked with Juventus rather than Milan, whilst Napoli will also be in the frame for a coach.

  1. Good. He’s a terrible idea. This is not a team built for defensive football. And he would just demand a bunch of past their best expensive signings. Horrible idea to begin with. Go get a manager who actually plays flowing offensive football, that will get the best out of these guys

  2. I know Ibra will be a bit different now but with Contes usual nonsenses I can imagine of some clashing at Milanello but Zlatan will win

  3. Hansi Flick or even Xavi Hernandez. Why’s no one looking at these guys? I think they play beautiful football and shouldn’t be too expensive. Perhaps the language barrier otherwise I don’t see why not. With Xavi there’s every guarantee that at least 30% of the primavera will feature in the first team assuming he doesn’t demand expensive signings like Lewandowski. Klopp once coached a dortmund team that were thrifty so if he doesn’t demand huge signings and will accept a moderate £6m salary then we can make a move. Same way Napoli got Ancelotti back then.

  4. It is very rare for foreign coach success in ACM . Italian coach have more success with ACM . In my personal opinion Sarri , Vicenzo Italiano or Spalletti ( if italy sacked him after Euro ) . All of them have medium salary , not demanding expensive player, play offensive football. Vicenzo Italiano doing good job in tournament like coppa & UECL witj fio last season & this season , Sarri have experience bring his team win scudetto & UEL

  5. The consistent bad takes here never ceased to amaze me. Sarri is the modern Ranieri. He’s a fraud, a poor coach. Motta is by far the best option, then Italiano. Lopetegui is garbage. As if a coach who was sacked by Wolves and failed at Real Madrid would even be under serious consideration. We need an Italian coach who will play Italian players. As for Motta, that Allegri may be sacked is irrelevant in every way, in 2024, Milan is more attractive than Juve.
