Longo: Bennacer likely to be called up by Algeria for AFCON – the situation

By Isak Möller -

Ismael Bennacer is working hard on his knee recovery and the return is expected at the end of the year. However, AC Milan will be without the midfielder once again in January, as Algeria are expected to call him up for the AFCON.

Bennacer sustained a serious injury in the Champions League clash against Inter and was forced into surgery a few days later. He has since been working on his recovery and while the comeback is getting closer, patience is needed from all parties.

As stated by Daniele Longo, via Francesco Nasato, Milan know that the midfielder most likely will be called up by Algeria for the AFCON. The tournament will take place between January 13 and February 11, which is far from ideal for the Rossoneri.

On the other hand, it’s clear that Milan cannot stop Bennacer from joining his country, especially after such a long recovery with the tournament as one of his goals. It remains to be seen if they will make up for this with a signing in January, but it seems unlikely given that the defence is the priority.

  1. This might not be a bad thing if they are sensible with him.

They can take some of the burden of playing him into form.

IF they are sensible with him, which international managers can have a habit of not being.
