Longo and Musah

Longo: Musah essential as Fonseca finally has identified Milan’s balance-maker

Milan added three points to their tally with a convincing display against Empoli on Saturday evening. As highlighted by Daniele Longo, they have the ‘Yunus Musah solution’ to thank for this, adding much-needed balance.

It has been a season filled with ups and downs so far for Milan. However, in the last few weeks, a bit of balance has seemingly been found with the inclusion of Musah from start. Playing to the right, the American certainly adds more in the defensive phase than Samuel Chukwueze.

As highlighted by Daniele Longo, yesterday’s win was perfect for Milan as they created many chances, scored three goals and conceded very little at the back. For a team that has often had lapses in concentration, it was an important sign of growth: now six consecutive games without a defeat,

Musah has been a key player recently, as the journalist continues, as it cannot be a coincidence that the best performances came with him as a starter. Chukwueze has the skills and personality that will allow him to be useful for the team this season, but Milan need balance and Fonseca has seemingly found it with Musah.

The feeling is that the Portuguese coach, after an annoying delay, has found the keystone needed in the Champions League race. The Scudetto, meanwhile, appears to be out of reach still.

  1. We should bring back Saelemakers too, because he is also good on the right in place of Musah. It was not by chance that he was part of the championship team.

    1. Haha touché. And let’s not forget, the match was against Empoli. We could have won that game with 10 men without playing anyone on the right.

  2. LOL. Balance? By disabling the attacks from the right side so we’re now 100% dependent on left wing? At least we have the new Cafu next to him. 🙂

    1. He doesn’t disable the right side of attack but if you check well out of possession he move down to the midfield to help Royal while Pulisic mostly run to the right and when is possession he push further up.
Yes the right wouldn’t function at it highest but if you will lok closely the matches that use those tactics have arguably been the best matches this season

      1. No they haven’t. Best match was still the inter one and with that Abe morata leao pulisic quarto up front we looked more balanced than we do now.
And the rw always goes back to help royal doesn’t matter who plays there. Just yesterday chuku went deep into his 11m zone to win the ball back. Pulisic on rw does that all the time.

  3. With all due respect Fonseca has indirectly found a 433 that works. Musah for all his endeavour, is not a forward but another midfielder.

So we have 3 mfs (with enough cover Reijnders can play a bit more as an attacking no.8)

And 3 FWs (typically pulisic + leao + morata)

    More balanced, yep 😀

  4. “Bring balance”. Musah started 5 games this season and he was good in 2 of them. He played twice as a defensive midfielder because Fofana wasn’t ready and then because Reijnders was suspended and it didn’t work. He was used as a RW against Juventus in perhaps one of the dullest games in history of football. He was used as a RWB/CM against Real Madrid and played well and yesterday he was a RW/RM where he helped well defensively but didn’t bring much going forward.
To say that a player brings balance, he needs many games with good performances, not 2 in an entire season.
That being sad, I would like to see Musah starting as a RWB/CM in a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3, that’s way better than having Loftus-Cheek or Chukwueze start. But we NEED to have Pulisic back as a RW.

    1. This.
      But more like
      —————Maignan————-
      Calabria-Gabbia-Thiaw-Theo
      ————–Fofana—————–
      –Musah————-Reijnders–
      -Pulisic—-Morata——Leao—

Fofana needs to in front of the defense. Musah would be more on the right and in the defensive phase, cover the right wing while Calabria gets closer to the center of the defense.

  5. I have thinking about have 3-4-3, for a long time now. It would strengthen the deficiency in our defenses. We have One fullback Theo, maybe Musah i number two
    ——————Maignan
    ——–Gabbia-Thiaw-Tomori
    Musah—————————-Theo
    ————Fofana—–Reijnders
    —Pulisic————————Leao
    ——————-Morato

    1. I totally agree with this.
Why start a 20m RB that requires a CM/RWB partner to defend well on the right.
Musah and pulisic/chukweze should always start on the right side of the pitch in a 3-4-3 where Emerson Royal sits on the bench or in a 4-3-3

  6. Milan played more of a 343 with Musah and Theo as wingbacks. This is the best formation and lineup and this should be the way forward. Gabbia and Thiaw as our starting CB pair and Musah and Theo as wingbacks.

In the defensive phase Milan played 541 with Theo and Musah dropping back to help the defense.
