Longo: ‘Not a question of money’ as Jovic wants to secure Milan renewal

Luka Jovic has impressed with the AC Milan shirt lately and with just two months left of the season, his goal is to secure a contract renewal.

Yesterday’s 2-2 draw didn’t help much for the standings, with Milan still in 9th place, but it did show that Tammy Abraham and Luka Jovic are in very good form. The latter has fought his way up the pecking order and with two goals in the last two games, you can only praise his hard work.

According to Daniele Longo, Jovic has two clear goals for the remainder of the season: to make it difficult for Sergio Conceicao to pick the starting No.9 and to convince Milan to renew his contract. The latter goal is certainly difficult, if not impossible, but the striker is refusing to give up.

Indeed, earlier in the season, Jovic never complained about the pecking order, continuing to work hard at Milanello just like any player. He knew that he would get the chance eventually and so far, he has definitely taken it.

The contract will expire in July and the Serbian wants to show the Rossoneri that he can be valuable next season as well. It’s ‘not a question of money’ either as the player reduced his salary to €1.3m net per season ahead of the current campaign, playing for the club he supported as a child.

At the age of 27, it’s clear that Jovic still has several years ahead as a top-level footballer and the performances in recent weeks attest to that. Playing almost as an attacking midfielder last night, he combined really well with his teammates and found space in between.

    1. He would actually be useful in a two striker system. But I feel like we will never properly utilize that system because of Leao.

      1. Exactly. But the chances are that we’ll be without Leao soon so they definitely should renew Jovic (or buy Abraham but why “waste” money on him as Jovic can do what he does).

      2. Damn right, if Leao could really apply himself -off the ball- in the defensive phase, he would be really dangerous on the left or beside Jovic.
We saw this yesterday jovic’s brilliant holdup play, strength on the ball, decision making, movement, timing, and brilliant passes to Leao.
This team can compete for the tittle only if the midfield and defense is sorted and all forwards play with the same intent we saw from jovic yesterday.

      3. I think you’re right. It raises the question; if Leão is world class why does ACM have to adapt to him so much? Leão can certainly drive past players but his passing is fair, shooting is poor and defense is lacking. I will say he has been much better on defense the last couple of games.

  1. What’s become apparent is Jovic does not work as a lone striker but does in tandem. He’s able to drop back to help relieve pressure as he is strong on the ball. I want to see more of the 4-4-2 setup with him as the second striker.

    1. Last night he genuinely played in the CAM role. Showing hold up skill, vision and pace.
      Plus defensive pressure.

There is a starting spot for him in the current formation.

  2. 2 striker system makes sense to accommodate him. Sounds like a plan. However, you need a coach who can adapt to different systems if the need calls for it.

    1. We already have 3-4 strikers who would definitely benefit from 2 striker tactics so why not do it? Leao? LOL. We saw his brilliance again last night.

  3. After dropping him from the CL list and barely playing him, he still didn’t give up and was playing his heart out every time he came on. This is a characteristic of a team player. He definitely deserves to start more games as he is capable of drawing defenders and creating space for others. I’d offer him extension in a heartbeat.

  4. It’s a no brainer. Keep him and renew his contract. We have already bought and sold 4 or 5 players who proved nothing while they were given many many minutes to play. Jovic was always put down by coaches for no reason. Maybe if we get a normal coach Jovic will blow up next season. It’s cheaper to keep him then to spend 30 million or more for another flop. Jovic just needs more minutes and he will fill up the opponents nets to the brim.

  5. The obvious choice even before this rich vein of form was to renew him, he has always been a very intelligent and technical striker who improves the people he plays with, it was apparent last season when he began to hit form, but Pioli stoppsed using him and never giving him a chance despite the fact Giroud was tired, finished , technically poor and completely out of form. Now he is playing well and honestly having him brings an extra dimension to out attack, it’s better to renew him than rather let him go and we start to look for another striker that would cost us good money..

  6. Maybe give him a run of games in attacking midfield. Atleast then we are scoring goals, there’s always hope to win even if the defense is non-existent
