Longoni: Bennacer can ‘be like a new signing’ for Milan amid positive pre-season

Ismael Bennacer has looked very bright during AC Milan’s pre-season so far and following what was a tough 2023-24 season, he will be looking for more consistency this upcoming campaign. As highlighted by Andrea Longoni, he could be like a new signing.

The Algerian midfielder missed half of last season due to a knee surgery that was carried out towards the end of the 2022-23 campaign. While he had a few good games last season, the consistency just wasn’t there and he will be hoping for more under Paulo Fonseca.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, Andrea Longoni discussed the situation on the mercato and highlighted the fact that Bennacer could be like a new signing in midfield. Indeed, with no injuries and more consistency, he will be fantastic for the team.

“At the risk of being repetitive, we reiterate that the ‘balancing’ midfielder should have already been signed: for Fofana it is the usual long, interminable and, let’s face it, even boring negotiation.

“In the middle, it would be a great move to confirm Bennacer: the Algerian could be like a new signing for Milan, hoping that from a physical point of view, he will have no issues.

“With him, and the possible arrivals of Fofana and Samardzic, the midfield would be more complete and would allow for five co-starters with Reijnders and Loftus-Cheek: having the most depth possible would help Fonseca manage a season full of commitments,” he writes.

Bennacer has already shown his bright side during the pre-season and seeing as Milan are yet to lock down Youssouf Fofana, his presence is absolutely vital.

  1. Bennacer has always been our best midfielder. I don’t really understand why we suddenly decided to sell him. I thought maybe he himself wanted to go to play in Saudi Arabia, but if this is not the case, then selling him makes no sense.

    1. Bennacer has always been our best midfielder!?!?!?
      When was this always?
He has been Milan player for 5 seasons.
In his first couple seasons he wasn’t as good as Hakan and Kessie.
In his following 2 seasons he wasn’t as good as Kessie and Tonali.
Last season he was injured for half of it and was the worst Milan midfielder for the other half.
So I wonder when was this “always” when he was Milan best midfielder?

    2. Indeed, from the crop of midfielders we currently have he’s still the best and the only one naturally capable of playing two pivot role.

      1. Spot on! Benny is still easily our best mid right now even when injured and head and shoulders above when he’s not. The drop in level of our midfield is telling. We’re so poor in that area.

    3. Yeah it would be daft to sell the 1 midfielder who is a proven world class player.

He and TJ and Fofana would be a nice balanced midfield
