Longoni: First Chukwueze and now Emerson – Fonseca must use revitalising skills

Samuel Chukwueze has looked very bright during pre-season, following the disappointing 2023-24 campaign, and Paulo Fonseca appears to be onto something. As highlighted by Andrea Longoni, the manager will have to do this with Emerson Royal as well.

Emerson Royal is scheduled to arrive this evening, more specifically around 21:45 CEST, and he will become the third signing of the summer. However, he certainly doesn’t excite the fanbase as much as Alvaro Morata and Strahinja Pavlovic did.

As highlighted by Andrea Longoni in his latest editorial for MilanNews, we have seen promising signs from Chukwueze in pre-season, largely thanks to Fonseca. The manager must now do the same with Emerson Royal, putting his career back on the right path.

“The third signing, Emerson Royal, was greeted by the Rossoneri fans with more scepticism than Morata and Pavlovic. The Brazilian will be playing in a position where, compared to recent years, there is certainly room for improvement, also to raise the general level of the team.

“He didn’t do so well in the Premier League (but Conte respected him), while in La Liga a few years earlier he seemed like a player capable of doing great things. Fonseca will have to be good at revitalising him, just as he seems to be doing with Chukwueze.

“The Nigerian seems different from the decidedly disappointing last season. Caution, because we have only seen a few friendly matches, but if he showed these improvements in official matches too, then Milan could count on ‘a new signing’,” he writes.

The season opener is scheduled for next week but before that, Milan will take on Monza in the Trofeo Silvio Berlusconi. We won’t get to see Emerson Royal then, but some of the other new signings will make an appearance for the Rossoneri.
