Longoni: Inter’s escape attempts failed as Milan refuse to roll over

After the defeat in the derby, many expected AC Milan to get left behind in the Scudetto race. Instead, the story has been the complete opposite as the Rossoneri remain in joint-first along with Inter.

There’s no doubt that the defeat in the derby was a big blow to the confidence, but Milan have responded really well in the league. Three wins later and Stefano Pioli’s men remain in first along with Inter, who have been unable to escape.

This was highlighted by Andrea Longoni in his editorial for MilanNews this morning, stating that many were certain that Inter would run away at the top. Given the tight schedule, the Rossoneri do indeed deserve praise for this.

“18 points out of 21, with a calendar that is certainly not easy: Milan’s start is truly remarkable. Yesterday’s game was anything but easy. Milan waited, studied, had patience and claimed a very heavy victory.

“Amidst all of this, it seems that the cousins’ [Inter, editor’s note] escape attempts failed… Yet for some, they had already won the Scudetto,” Longoni wrote, among other things.

Milan will take on Borussia Dortmund next and following the draw against Newcastle in the opener, they will be looking to claim all three points. It won’t be easy, though, and a performance similar to that in the second half against Lazio will be needed.
