Longoni says Milan must ‘clean house’ and hire an Italian manager in the summer

The journalist Andrea Longoni has delivered a clear verdict on AC Milan’s defeat against Torino, which has made the remainder of the season very difficult. In the summer, as he states, the Rossoneri will need to clean up completely.

Yesterday’s game was a chance for Milan to clinch some very important points, especially in light of Lazio and Bologna dropping points, but instead they lost. Individual mistakes were behind the misstep, once again, and where to go from here is a tough question to answer.

Longoni shared his thoughts on the disappointing defeat in his weekly column for MilanNews, highlighting that Milan outdid themselves with this one. In the summer, the Rossoneri will need to ‘clean house’ and bring in an Italian manager.

“You hit rock bottom and you always manage to dig down. Milan, this season, always manage to lower the level, week after week. It’s incredible what happens every time they take the field. And to think that yesterday there was also the added motivation of Bologna’s defeat and Lazio’s draw. By now it’s all a lost cause.

“The script has been the same for weeks. Wrong formation, individual mistakes, changes at half-time, and a final formation that is confusing to say the least. I have lost track of the individual mistakes at this point.

“Gabbia and Musah in Zagreb, Maignan in Rotterdam, Theo Hernandez mid-week and then yesterday, the festival of the error. Maignan again, Pulisic missing the penalty and the defenders sleeping on the quickly-taken free kick.

“The goalkeeper, in all of this, is a case without explanation. And then the enormous responsibilities of the coach. Fofana on the bench, starting immediately with four attacking players: why? Then with Milan behind, he takes off Leao and puts on a midfielder…

“Until May, it will be a slow agony for the Rossoneri fans. Then it will be necessary to clean house and change everything, without looking anyone in the face. Coach, without a doubt: after wrong choices, it will be necessary to go for a certainty coach. Italian, winner, with experience in top clubs. Identikit of Conte, Allegri or Sarri, each with their own pros and cons.

“And then, the most important thing, the management will have to be reset. Clearly visible already in the summer to many, but unfortunately not to those who own the club,” he wrote.

Bologna and Lazio are up next for the Rossoneri, meaning six points are needed from these games to keep the top-four hopes alive. It won’t be easy, however, especially if the mistakes are present once again.

  1. Allegri.

Milan needs points. Fans will wait a long time for scudetto but next season without Europe will be poor.

With new coach and departures of flops I expect fight for 1-2 position…

    1. Please let me advised you. Guys Conceicao is even far better than most of the Italian coach your talking about so the simple things we can do to restore Acmilan is to sign Quality players Now let me give you Guys pure breakdown of what Acmilan is doing that’s wrong playing the 4-2-3-1 is a perfect formation for Acmilan but what we need is to bring in perfect players that will suit the line up, we don’t give young players chance my first advice is to bring Reijnder to attacking midfield secondly we change our players let’s bring in Chaka Traore to the senior team there’s something about that player then let’s test this line up it will help
      M.maignan
      Tomori,thiaw, Pavlovic, Bartasaghi
      Musah, Warren Bondo
      Sottil , Reijnder,Joao Felix
      Santi. Gemenez

      1. 4231 is actually Milan agony now.
The more Milan play this formation the deeper it digs lower. This formation requires alot of commitment but they can’t be found.

        Leao walks 50%
Theo runs forward like a winger
        Right wing is inconsistent
        Striker not prolific
2 defensive midfield is not robust

        Too many problems la

Switch to 442 will be tactically more stable

      2. No my friend. Italian coaches are far better than any country in Europe and it’s not even close. The track record of Italian coaches throughout Europe speaks for itself.

        1. Ok so why did the great Motta get embarrassed by PSV I thought they were titles favourites? You people talked very big before the season started

  2. I can completely understand the urge to identify with individual players. The more Italian players or coaches there are, the better Italian fans—who make up the majority of the team’s supporters—can, of course, identify with the team or certain individuals. But we also had Pioli, an Italian coach, with whom things didn’t work out in the end. In the past ten years, we’ve had Italian coaches with whom it didn’t work out either. Why should this particular type of new coach make a clean slate? And why should it be of fundamental importance for a positive change?

  3. Any Italian manager or even Zidane. But not Allegri please. His win with Milan was commendable but his win with Juve was just inheritance from conte.

  4. Gasperini wants to go , he say it in last reports he want to leave Atalanta… he can be good for Milan but question is …..is Conceicao bad coach ? Because I think he is ok, but we need new motivated LW nad RB

    1. No way. Why would we want him? He is a big Juventus fan, a few seasons ago was happy to say in press he wants to beat Milan for Juve to qualify for CL.

    2. Gasp doesn’t do big teams well and his man management skills are hit and miss. Look at the Ademola mess. Papu Gomez before him. He will alienate big players and has a big ego on him.

  5. It should have been Conte, we would be top 3 with possibility of title. It was so easy to know but you here wrote articles how Conte is bad for Milan, one trick pony with one tactic and formation + similar comments. And yeah, you were, as always – wrong.

    1. It’s too late for Conte , even he doesn’t win this season because Inter is better, he still stay at Napoli for next season. Do you think Conceicao is bad ? Yes I know maybe we can’t win big trophy’s with him but still, I think it will be good if he stay. Because really don’t know who will come to this mess… and no more Italian ( good Italian) coach omis available…

    2. It should’ve been Conte for you low-IQ people who havent seen how much damage he does to every club he joins

Literally no top club wanted him but hey he is playing 1 game a week at Napoli and is challenging for title so he must be good huh? See how that goes next season

      1. De zerbi would be the best choice becuz he has a tactics that no1 has in Italy u see what he does in France and plus he a Milan fan played for the team

  6. Your hypothesis that conte would have brought Milan into the top 3 is based solely on the fact that conte worked very well at Napoli. However, he didn’t work as well at Tottenham, for example. Conceccao also worked very well at Porto. What does that say? Nothing. What I mean is, don’t you think there are too few data points to validate this hypothesis?

  7. The coach doesn’t need to be Italian, the director does. We need an Italian director that wants to sign Italian players and wants the coach to play more Italian players. The best up and coming coach is Iraola, he’s Spanish, but he plays with a mix of players including 3 English.

    1. Exactly my thoughts 💯

We are at risk of becoming another Man united always chopping and changing. The problem is we’ve lost our identity trying to meet Cardinales marketing dream rather than a core of loyal Italian first XI with a sprinkling of quality (rather than quantity) foreigners.

Look at the UEFA squad list if you don’t believe me, we can’t even fill the 4x serie A trained places never mind the 4x academy ones.

  8. If they don’t hire Jurgen Klopp or Maurizio Sarri this summer, I have to give up on this management. Ive rooted for this team religiously since1998. Gerry Cardinale has NO CLUE what he is doing. Conte waited for us. Ibrahimovic wanted him. He took a mid table team, sold Osimhen and Kvaratchkelia, and sits in first place. Enough with this portuguese BS. Sarri and Klopp are top 5 coaches in the world, along with pep ancelotti and simeone. Facts are facts.

  9. Conte!?!?!
    Bottling the scudetto.
Plays in 1 competition and if he doesn’t win it this season, Napoli should fire him, because he is definitely not winning it next season when he would have to play in 4 competitions. We know that he is not good when he has to coach every 3 days.
    Napoli should hire Gasperini.

    1. Yea. But ADL didn’t exactly help him, did he? Terrible depth squad. He had to play Politano as a LB and had to field Mazocchi and Juan Jesus for crying out loud. Not to mention they replaced Kvara with out-of-shape Okafor who hasn’t even played yet.

That’s not on Conte. That’s ADL doing ADL things. And I’m not even a fan of Conte. I’m just looking at it objectively.

  10. 4231 was a blessing that turned to a curse. Pioli only went with it because we lacked players in certain areas and he was clever enough to find balance in it. I think the plan was always about moving to a 433 or 4312. At this moment, if we sold Leao, a 4321 would actually be best with Tiji and Pulisic as the attacking mids. We need to become more narrow and direct. The management and coach need to change first and then we’ll have a better idea of what kind of players we need to plug in with what formation. The most important thing is that we put the right leaders in place to restore the Milan attitude and the family feel that made this club great.

  11. Our last two Italian coaches won us our last two scudetto.
Without an Italian coach and the core of the players being Italian AC have lost her identity of being an Italian giant.
The most important players in Milan now are from France, USA, and Portugal not to mention the motivated but desperate and clueless Portuguese coach. Just take a look at the clubs from these countries, mediocres.
See the clubs outperforming us this season, they all have Italian coaches and the core of the teams are Italians.
We need at least 4 quality Italian players in our starting lineup and a decent Italian manager and above all, Leao must go. His negative attitude is robbing off on the entire team.

  12. If you notice, from 1988 to 2022 when Milan won the championships, the managers were always Italians, from Saachi, Capello, Zaccheroni, Ancelotti, Allegri to Pioli…
