Longoni: Mirante experiment backfires as Milan’s weakness is further highlighted

By Isak Möller -

Up until the winter friendlies, Ciprian Tatarusanu was the undisputed backup goalkeeper for AC Milan. The situation has now changed, even though Antonio Mirante didn’t exactly impress against PSV Eindhoven.

As a result of Mike Maignan’s injury, Tatarusanu has played quite a lot for Milan this season and he hasn’t always been brilliant between the sticks. The Rossoneri fans, therefore, have demanded a shift in the hierarchies or a January signing.

Andrea Longoni, as he points out in his latest editorial for MilanNews, was one of the people that asked for a shift in the hierarchies between Tatarusanu and Mirante. A shift that indeed materialised but unfortunately didn’t pay off.

The PSV friendly only highlighted the fact that Milan don’t really have a strong backup goalkeeper and given Maignan’s injury struggles, this is a bit worrying. Milan have secured the arrival of Vasquez, but it remains to be seen if he will be chosen over the other two.

  1. idk where people pick that stuff up that tata wasnt brilliant. He did a superb job so far. top5 in saves in the league, 8 games, 31 shoots on target, 24 saves,7 goals. Mike on the other hand 7 games, 22 shoots on target, 13 saves and 8 goals.. Now i know Mike is the better keeper but Tata did a fucking good job so far anyone who thinks otherwise needs to watch tenis or something

    1. I can tell people get bored really quick and they like to make up stuff and create stories that are nothing but real.. Tata has done a great job covering for Mike absolutely no doubt about this. Anything or anyone saying he’s no good has no clue whatsoever

    1. This. I completely agreed.

Really hate people who acts disrespectful towards players like Tatarusanu who doesn’t have plenty of trophies under his records and keeps mocking him just because he made some mistakes.

  3. Lol not long ago there was an article in here that wants Pioli to play Mirante more than Tatarusanu.

Now you see why Mirante is the 3rd GK and also a lesson to fans & journalist aka spectators that being a coach and managing a team is NOT EASY, especially with the current Milan who doesn’t have many high quality players. This is different than playing video games just replace player A with B and voila job’s done lol.

I hope people, especially the ones who keeps badmouthing Pioli, will learn to RESPECT him and understand how hard his job is.

  4. Not sure what the point of these massive squads are if we don’t have any faith in the subs even when the subs have subbed perfectly well until now. The January transfer market is like Christmas and Boxing Day sales generally – directors just buying stuff because that’s what people do rather that what people need.

  5. Hey ForzaMilan are you over from the Football Italia website? I’ve finally given up!

Agree with your comments. Plus Italian teams always struggle in friendlies for some unknown reason.

  6. Not worrying myself about the way things are run. If they don’t want to sign a quality keeper to man the post in place of Maignan, n want to keep using these two, then, the results are theirs to ponder, n deal with. Can’t keep having my BP up every time these guys are in goal.
