Longoni: Pros and cons obvious but swift No.9 decision is more important for Milan

AC Milan are looking to bolster the team with a striker this summer and while Joshua Zirkzee appeared to be the one, the negotiations have become complicated. As highlighted by Andrea Longoni, a decision must soon be made.

Olivier Giroud left the club at the end of June and although that was recent, Milan knew about his departure for a long time. They have been working on Zirkzee for months but as things stand, Man Utd are ahead after accelerating talks with the Dutchman’s agent.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, the journalist and pundit Andrea Longoni discussed the No.9 pursuit. Above all, while the pros and cons of each target are obvious, the most important thing is to make a swift decision.

“Arriving on July 7th without a striker, knowing for months and months that Giroud would leave, represents an obvious fault of the management. The Rossoneri are late, pretending nothing is happening isn’t good for the team.

“So, in attack, Zirkzee, Morata or Lukaku? The Dutchman could solve the No.9 issue for many years, while the other two would bring experience and reliability. However, the latter would be a bit like postponing a need which has been evident for several seasons.

“There are pros and cons, but it’s time to make an immediate decision and not delay any further. Dear Milan, if you are there, give us a sign,” he wrote.

It remains to be seen what will happen but it’s clear that the Euros have affected Milan’s pursuit. For example, Zirkzee only got called up due to a late injury and at that point, he decided to delay a decision on his future.

  1. They have basically 3 options:
    – Overpay for average guys like Zrizkee
    – Risk and grab striker from league outside top5 (like Brobbey from Eredivisie) who will either turn-out to be a top-gun, or end average like Saelemakers
    – Get an experienced striker (like Morata) who would solve position for 1-2 years

    1. Or. Option 4.

Stop wasting time. As soon as Kia said his commission request they should have pivoted to Dobvyk.

      1. Dovbyk outside his Ukraine league stunt it’s his first time he hits more than 10 goals in a season and he’s 27. So I would say it’s more likely that he’s a one season wonder, especially if we take into account his euros where he started every game yet he didn’t score even once. So it’s fine to give a 27 y old striker more than 40 mils without taking into account the commissions as well but it’s not okay to give 48 or 50 for Zirkzee, when as well they are ready to pay 15-18 for ROYAL . It’s just that the management is cheap and won’t go beyond 20 and if hell freezes 30 mils and that’s the reality

    1. Ramos won’t leave PSG, now that MBappe is leaving he will actually have a chance to shine. Pity, as I’d love to see him at Milan.

Greenwood… the less said the better.

There are other options (I’d like to see an interest in Haji Wright of Coventry, the next Gyokeres IMO) but realistically I think not blocking Camarda and getting a ready-made solution for 2-3 years might not be glamorous but is the right approach.

  2. We all have ideas about which players could be brought in, but the club’s management obviously only sees numbers and costs! I’m not sure how much budget they even set for this season !? The media wrote about some figures, but somehow it seems to me that without the sale of at least one of our more valuable players, they won’t even move from their place.

    1. Strikers are expensive and there are a limited number of good strikers available for less than €40 million. We were never going to blow more than half our budget on a striker, no matter who else is sold. That would be foolish.

  3. Bullshi. – euro had nothing at all to do with zirkzee comedy – milan is led these days by a bunch of greedy misers who are stupid, arrogant and fools who simply want to be among top 4/5 serie A teams to qualify for champions league. AMBITION – ZERU as mourinho would say. And of course our clowns think they can introduce new moral standards in the mercato. Bollocks.
