Longoni: ‘Pay attention’ – why Milan are considering a move for Depay

By Oliver Fisher -

Memphis Depay is a player to ‘pay attention’ to when it comes to potential movements from AC Milan, according to journalist Andrea Longoni.

Sky Italia reported earlier in the week that Depay could well be an alternative to Joshua Zirkzee or an additional piece for the attack. He will be a free agent in the summer once his contract expires and he does not seem to have any deal lined up with another club.

The 30-year-old can play anywhere across the forward line and scored nine times for Atletico Madrid last season across all competitions. He is a player that has been linked with Milan seemingly every summer for years, and we spoke about how he and others could form a ‘new Dutch era’ at the club.

Longoni published a column for MilanNews in which he gave updates on potential Milan targets in view of the summer and he seemingly confirmed that Depay is being evaluated.

“In the department [in addition to Zirkzee], also pay attention to the Memphis Depay track: another Dutchman, 30 years old, who is released for free by Atletico Madrid,” he said.

“A flexible centre-forward who could bring enormous experience, which this team is terribly missing after the farewells of Kjaer and Giroud.

“We are talking about a player with a very strong character, who has always given his best in the most delicate matches, when others’ legs may be shaking. Milan also need players like this.”

  1. I doubt an injury prone player is what Milan needs for experience especially knowing that Morata is available for 15m.

If Milan need an experienced striker then that’s who they should go for and not Memphis Depay.

    1. I think he is worth council’s provide an X factor in many games but he will not defend or work for the team but is capable of genius moments

I think free transfers to beef up the squad can be good if you have the right profile like players like Depay, Thiago Alcantra but not average players like Origi

      1. They will not come for 2m/4m first.
Both are injury prone, thiago alcantra played barely in Liverpool even after a good medical team, imagine about Milan medical team and quality of sansiro ground with Thiago alcantra and Depay.

Jovic is much better option, he is only 26y old. Best days are yet to come.

  2. Can he also play as a winger? He could at some point I think I can remember, but please help me. Him and Stuttgats Guirassy would be ideal.

    1. Yeah he can play everywhere in attack. For me good deal because attack like Leao-Depay-Pulisic sounds good.. he has great experience in every league + CL and he can be also deputy for Leao or even for Pulisic. But mutch depend on the market because we already have Okafor and Chukweze like deputy ….Okafor has great potential but after first seasson Chukweze is not good enough…

  3. Good evening everyone i think Milan should consider mauro icardi, and also they should keep theo Hernandez please. Forza milan

    1. As a Dutchman I can say Depay is a slight upgrade to Origi. But Milan shouldnt strive for a player who is pretty good but nothing special. He isnt getting any younger, is injury prone and is an attention seeker on and off the field. He can definitely score more goals than Origi though. But 9 goals is about right with him.

  4. Not sure why everyone here is talking Icardi all of a sudden but I’d be all in favour of him or Morata if Zirkzee’s agent doesn’t want business.

  5. Free Agents are NOT what they seem. They usually come with huge wages. And this one is no different.

Plus he was bad at Atletico. Bad on the pitch, bad attitude and bad all around.

  6. If one thing is absolutely sure in the football world is that : Milan can’t buy or find a real talented young and prolific striker capable to make 25+ goals/season . We just can’t…for more than 10-15 years. It’s like a handicap of this club…
