CM: Maignan wants €8m per year to renew with Milan – his potential destination

There continues to be mixed messages regarding the potential renewal of Mike Maignan, especially regarding his demands.

Maignan’s contract expires at the end of the season and negotiations regarding a renewal do not seem to be close to conclusion. Thus, there is a concrete risk that he leaves the club on a free transfer at the end of the season, despite some more encouraging recent reports.

Maignan’s demands

Having arrived in the summer of 2021 from Lille for just over €15m to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, Maignan immediately proved himself to be a reliable goalkeeper and at times was one of the best performing players in Europe in his position.

As Calciomercato.com report, Maignan and his entourage are asking for €8m net per season in order to renew, a significant figure that the club has already stated it cannot reach. The gap between asking price and offer is therefore wide at the moment, and a departure seems likely.

It is perhaps a reflection of the fact an offer was retracted earlier in the year, but also that the French goalkeeper’s current salary is €2.8m net (€3.62m gross), which is the ninth-lowest among current squad members.

Where could ‘Magic Mike’ end up? Chelsea have never looked away from Maignan after negotiations in the summer. The goalkeeper was pushing for a move, but Milan rejected the Blues’ offer, and now they are tempted to get him for free.

  1. €8m net or (€10.4m gross) is at the very high end, but what is the alternative? How many goals does he cost? What is the benefit of a world class goalkeeper?

One could also argue, that with a current salary of €2.8m net (€3.62m gross) he is grosely underpaid.

    1. Some reports say hed be happy with 5 million, i think thats a good amount. That being said, looking at the alternative options, at this point id rather give him 8 million.

      1. And like Snake said, if we’d count the couple of years we’ve had him for mere 2.8M€ it wouldn’t be “completely unfair” to give him, let’s say 5-6M€ now. But 8M€? I think that’s pushing it too far. If he gets 8M€ (he won’t!) he’d injure himself in September for 5-6 months for sure. 😀

  2. Of course, any confirmation he actually requested for this amount? Or t’s Milan’s new way of making him look greedy? Eh? Plastering the obvious cracks?

If Leao collects 7m and is playing in fits and starts, why offer magic Mike less ? If they didnt want to trigger a domino effect, they should have been smart to confirm the previous offer of 5m. But that’s the price you pay for stupidity!
If pulisic hands in an 8m contract request, we will question his fitness too? But Milan board happen to be one of the highest paid in the league, but it’s the players who must tighten their belts. Awww nice!

  3. I doubt he stated he wants 8 net, if he did – it is clear way of saying I am leaving. While I am all for the financial health of the club, the fixation on salaries is a bit excessive – we often have lost players over this, when the additional cost of replacing the said players is much higher. Yes, there is a domino effect and once the ceiling is removed there will be a constant pressure from the players when they renew contracts – but guess what – the inflation on the transfermarket is also through the roof. And I’d much rather pay more to the top players we have than to agents and other clubs for possible future flops.

    1. “And I’d much rather pay more to the top players we have than to agents and other clubs for possible future flops.”

Now that’s a valid point many forget. Those people have already shown they can handle the pressure Milan-shirt brings. Most of the players Milan buy fail miserably if we’re being brutally honest.

  4. Gave him at this moment best salary at club and that is. He will take i think. He must have double then Nmunku Gimenez Estupinan and etc who not doing nothing for club.
If you dont gave him best salary at club you dont respect him and he should leave at end of his contract.

  5. Press leaks for negotiations. If he wants to stay he’ll renewed at 5-6 Met. If he wants to try a new adventure, he deserves our well wishes.

    1. A mature answer.

If we can afford what he wants, pay it. If we can’t, let him go without prejudice.

Milan is his place of work, not his boyhood dream. Like anyone on the planet, he’s entitled to go and earn what he’s worth (even if “what he’s worth” is ludicrous outside of the context of football – that’s a different conversation).

This isn’t someone thats ran down their contract – we have made a pigs ear of it.

  6. If I remember correctly he was going to sign for 5 million before RedBird withdraw and offered 4. If he wants to be with us then I thing somewhere between 5-6 is fair. I think 0.5-1 should be fair extra cost for RedBird getting the cold feet last time around. But I think 8 million is lunacy, similar to where we were heading with Donnarumma. The highest paid player in the squad should not be the goalkeeper in my opinion.

  7. board canceled 5m/y deal agreed cz of 3-4 bluders, then he getting better, now he ask higher.. some people may say he’s greed & let him go cz Milan is bigger than any players..
w/ same logic mean Milan is smaller than origi/ gimenez/ nkunku cz they are greeder & board can’t sell them..
we must remember that Mike is useful & the other is useless..
i want to see Milan being bigger to origi/ gimenes/ nkunku/ other useless & Mike stay w/ us

  8. If the original source of this rumor is in the UK, the 8M€ is gross for sure and that would be absolutely payable by Milan. I’m not buying it’s 8M€ net he’s asking for. Unless it’s his way of saying “I’m leaving”.
