Watch: Maignan pulls off amazing penalty save to deny Dybala and earn win for Milan

Mike Maignan produced a fantastic penalty save to preserve AC Milan’s lead against Roma, bailing out Youssouf Fofana in the process.

Inside the final 15 minutes, Fofana gave away a free-kick right on the edge of Milan’s box after a rash challenge on Cristante. Then, he blocked the resulting set-piece with his arm to give Roma a penalty.

However, at a time when his record against spot kicks had been put under scrutiny by the media, Maignan rose to the occasion. Dybala went bottom right but didn’t get enough power on it, with the Frenchman parrying it around the corner.

It would prove to be a winning contribution, too: Milan held out after the penalty save to earn a 1-0 victory and a huge three points. Sometimes, goalkeepers have to take matters into their own hands to keep a clean sheet.

  1. What was even more impressive than the save on the penalty, was the look on his face when all of his teammates were congratulating him. He was stone-faced. He knew it wasn’t over and he wasn’t finished. That’s what makes him great and that’s why the team has to re-sign him.

    1. I’ve always heavily supported Maignan, but let’s be honest – it was poor penalty from Dybala to begin with, not so much high quality keeping. At least the high-IQ fan that suggested a week ago he should either save all his penalties (as it’s his job) or leave the club, will be satisfied…

On your point I agree – he actually was 100% concentrated for the follow up corner, in case the Roma players decided to surprise us with quick return of the ball in the field while we celebrate.
