Italian football is going through a crucial period of change after they failed to qualify for a third straight World Cup, and movements could concern AC Milan.
There was a call for heads to roll after the play-off defeat to Bosnia in the last international break, and roll they have. Gennaro Gattuso resigned as head coach, while Gabriele Gravina is out as the president, so there will be changes at all levels.
Italy’s new era
Giovanni Malagò and Giancarlo Abete are the two names that emerged yesterday from the Lega Serie A and Lega Nazionale Dilettanti as candidates for the presidency of the FIGC, Corriere della Sera (via MilanPress) report.
The deadline for submitting candidacies is May 13th, and from the point that a new president is chosen it will be time to start making decisions to shape the future of the Federation, including collaborators and the head coach.
Massimiliano Allegri’s name has emerged in recent weeks as a possible target for the head coach role, and in the last few hours it has been said that he is the ‘ideal man’ in the eyes of Malagò, the favourite to become the president.
Corriere della Sera also reports on Malagò’s consideration of Paolo Maldini. The ex-CONI president is considering adding a former player to the group that surrounds him, and there is arguably nobody more iconic in Italian football than the ex-Milan director.
On Allegri, La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that the coach hasn’t ruled out joining the Azzurri because Milan’s strategy for the summer and beyond is still unclear. The contract would be for two years, with a potential extension for another two years if they qualify for EURO 2028.
