Maldini confirms Donnarumma’s exit with dignified message: “I can only wish him the best”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan director Paolo Maldini has essentially confirmed that Gianluigi Donnarumma will be leaving the club when his contract expires.

All major sources are reporting that Milan are close to announcing the signing of Mike Maignan from Lille who seems set to become the club’s new number one, with Donnarumma’s contract expiring at the end of June and everything pointing towards him leaving Milan after nine years. It is certainly a statement from Paolo Maldini and co. that they will not be held to ransom by a goalkeeper and his agent who are adjudged to have excessive demands.

Paolo Maldini spoke during a live chat on Milan’s official Twitch channel this evening and the Donnarumma topic was brought up by one of the hosts, with the former captain all but confirming he is on the way out.

“I think we have to thank all the players who have made this incredible season. Gigio was a leader and often a captain. People have a hard time understanding what it means to be a professional, who must be ready to change clubs,” he said (via MilanNews).

“It’s difficult to accept, it is increasingly difficult to find careers. We must have respect for those who have given so much to Milan, who have never disrespected us. The paths diverge, I can only wish him the best. “

  1. It is likely that Maldini will soon have to wish good luck to Romagnoli, Colhanoglu and Kesie. Because these are all players who ask for too much money, as Gazditis stated, he will not give them that money because he is the boss in Milan and not Maldina. Maldini’s job in Milan eats listening to Gazditis and does what he tells him and that’s it. So we will listen to Maldini at least 4 more times when he says thank you to the player and wish him good luck at another club, and then Milan will buy players like Maignan worth 15 million like Meite who is worth 8 million and will play with them Champions League. If this is the strategy of AC Milan, a war should be expected between the fans and the club’s management. And that will be very bad for the Club..
And let me just say that today no one plays football for free, everyone plays for money, but the stars must be worthy and paid, if a Ronsldo at the age of 34 can have 30 million per season at Juventus, then Donnarumma can have 10 million.

    1. I agree and disagree in part, Donna deserves the $ 10 but why we have to pay 20 to his agent, also $10 mill for 2 years with the right to leave the team any time he wants, when a better offer comes, there is now way that any club will acept that deal, it is like you are renting the gola keeper and then in the next January window, keeper decide to leave some where else, that is not going to work or you are all in for at least 4 years or you out, and good look finding some one. We should be concidering keeping only players that want to be in the club, the Romannoli situation, he is not that good any more, so we should cash out some profits before his contract ends and goes for free like Donnaruma. That is my humble opinion.

    2. I have been following your comments since yesterday. What exactly do you want? A player we made who he is today can’t hold us to ransom. Is 8m not enough for an academy player? I don’t think you are a true fan. We have paid his older brother whom they imposed on us 1m for yes now just to seat on the bench. Please reason with the club. Yes we should get rid of any player that wishes to leave. Atalanta as a club doesn’t have any big star before qualifying for the uCL. All we need are committed players who are hungry to play for the club.

    3. Don’t drag Ronaldo into the drama, Ronaldo has been this modern football for a long time and he has work hard day out to reach this far to earn that. Donna and Ronaldo are not in the same level of football.
Soon you relate Donna to Messi because is over 30+. These are players of great level don’t compare them with Donna. All Donna want is more more money.
I’M A MILANISTA! I STAND WITH THE CLUB!!
Romagnoli and Calhanoglu are next in line.

Kessie has been the our best player all season and he request 5-6m to renew his contract. I’m sure both parties will reach agreement on 5m for his renewal soon.

  2. I did not fall for this story that Eliot tells through his MPs Maldini and Massara that the club is more important than the individual because it has nothing to do with this story, Milan has a problem with ELIOT cooperation that does not want to enter the big stars. That is the real truth

  3. Good move by maldini. Donnarumma is a great keeper, but there are other keepers that can offer the same quality and a much better price. Good move to sign the other keeper. Use these funds to build an attack.

  4. Elliott strategy is very good, even as we enter champions league we should spend cleverly. Because still we don’t know whether coming days will be normal and all the big clubs are bankrupt now.
We don’t need to spend big money on certain players who just play for money and no control of players by the club.
Milan have good scouting department, we are still in the building process of great team.
    Good luck Maldini and Massara

  5. Juve financial problems started with the Ronaldo’s signing. Paying annual gross wages of 60Milllion for a single player is crazy. The total cost of CR7 to Juve is over 300Million. You can purchased Atlanta with that sum.

For Milan, coming from critical financial position and inspire of the huge capital injections by the Owners Elliott, the Rossoneri are still not out of the red yet. Milan cannot afford the Romantic signing of Donnaruma at over 120Million in total cost.

Remember also that revenues and incomes are dwindling due to absence of fans and tickets income.

Donnaruma, will be lucky to get any big club to signing on the same terms offered by Milan. Most club are fighting to stay afloat.

Just look at the mess at Inter Milan, they won the title but the apprehension for survival is shaking the foundations for success laid.

letting Donnaruma go and signing Magnan is the best managerial decision from Milan in a long while.

  6. Maldini make them understand that no player is bigger than Milan. Donnarumma is a great goalkeeper, but he have no respect for Milan.
Remember Legend Costacuta said, why kiss the badge when you can’t pen down renewal why delay your renewal. Just for the love of money and his greedy agent. He will get the money he want somewhere else.
Milan should let go of Romagnoli once the windows open, say bye to Mino Raiola clients, tho Ibra don’t have much in years.
