Paolo Maldini has made a few things clear during his post-playing career and it is built around the fact that he would only return to AC Milan or help Italy.
Since he stopped playing, Milan fans called for Maldini’s return to the club in some way. After all, a legend like him does not come around often. So, when he returned in 2018, there was clear excitement about what the future could hold.
That excitement was worthwhile too, given that the Rossoneri won the Scudetto, thanks to his leadership as the technical director. In fact, it remains one of the biggest ‘What ifs’ in recent Milanese history, if he was given the funds to do what he wanted after the title.
Instead, he was relieved of his duties a year later and Maldini has faded into the shadows since.
Maldini’s future
Over his career, his love for Milan has never died down and even when Carlo Ancelotti asked him to help Chelsea in 2009, he turned it down in favour of the Diavolo. As Calciomercato.com reports, nothing has changed, even since leaving San Siro again.
He would only return to football to aid the Rossoneri, or perhaps the Italian football system.
Recently, there have been rumours of him helping a rebuild of the footballing ecosystem with the FIGC and it could be a consideration. Some suggestions have been made that he could head towards a role, but there is nothing concrete yet.
However, it would interest him, the report states.

Paolo has no way back in while Gerry’s around and it doesn’t sound like there is an Arabic consortum ready to take over.
Realistically, Paolo is needed more at the national level. He isn’t part of the old indoctrinated failing system and could facilitate some real change with the right support system.
Gerry or Furlani? Which one was it that wanted to get rid of Maldini? We’ll see if Furlani gets replaced like some rumors said earlier.
