With just a few minutes left until Cagliari-Milan kicks off, Paolo Maldini was interviewed by Italian media and spoke about the Rossoneri’s situation. They need just three more points to be crowned winter champions.
Milan have started this season in the best way possible and despite Inter’s win against Juventus last night, they are still in first place albeit tied on points. With a win tonight, as mentioned, they would be the winter champions.
Speaking to Sky Italia, as cited by MilanNews, Maldini spoke about the ‘title’ and said it confirms their hard work. He also about Mario Mandzukic, who underwent his medical tests for the Rossoneri this morning.
On the title of winter champion…
“Being there or behind a point doesn’t change the meaning of this season, which is completely different from how the other one started. The value of what we are doing, however, gives it”.
On Mandzukic…
“I think he’s the confirmation of a strategy. The team is very young with ready reinforcements. It’s last year’s strategy that led us to obtain results, we will continue on this path.”
On Covid…
“The players are ready, we are very attentive to the protocols, we do everything with the utmost transparency. We ask the players a minimum of flexibility to always be ready to play.”
On the inclusion of a player like Mandzukic in the locker room…
“We know Mandzukic’s character well, we talked to him. We don’t consult with our players, it’s the club that decides. We have direct contact with the manager. In football, good guys aren’t enough, not that Mario isn’t. The group also draws on those who are slightly different, I’m not talking about Mario but in general.”
Finally, he was asked about Fikayo Tomori. The Chelsea defender is set to arrive on loan with an option to buy. The director, of course, didn’t confirm the deal but also didn’t rule it out, instead stating they have followed him for a while.
“Between the almost signed and the signed things change. It’s a creative market. If we follow him and tried to take him even a few months ago, it means that we have seen in him some characteristics that are right for us.”
