Man Utd boss Solskjaer sends strong message to Milan over midfielder

By Oliver Fisher -

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seemingly confirmed that Nemanja Matic will be staying at Old Trafford amid reported interest from AC Milan.

A number of outlets have claimed recently that Milan could look to add more experience to a struggling young squad, with La Gazzetta dello Sport suggesting that Matic is among the possible targets to do just that.

The paper recently reported that the former Chelsea man is the first name on their wish list, while the Daily Star then added Matic has been told by United that he is no longer required at Old Trafford.

Then, Calciomercato.com reported that Matic remains in the sights of Milan and Inter, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, and that the red half of the city have the edge due to excellent relations with his agent.

However, it now seems as though any chance of the Serbia international leaving this month have now been crushed.

“You could probably handle and deal with three players rotating there,” Solskjaer said (via FOX).

“But we have two players who are fit there now, Nemanja [Matic] and Fred. It’ll be a hard task for them, and we’ll just have to ask them to keep going if they can.

“Nemanja has been out for a while, Paul [Pogba] has been out for a while and I think Scott [McTominay] and Fred have done really well, so now Nemanja is in when Scott is out.

“Paul, unfortunately, is not there, so we’ll just have to find a way. You just can’t accept that we’re tired, you’ve got to find a way and it might be that we’ll have to find different positions for someone.”

Meanwhile, BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone (via StrettyNews) attended Solskjaer’s press conference, and it looks like the Norwegian ruled out Matic’s departure.
