‘The moment of truth will be in March’ – Mayor Sala gives fresh stadium update

The Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala has suggested that a ‘moment of truth’ will arrive regarding AC Milan and Inter’s stadium plans in a few months.

The stadium developments have caused a lot of confusion among Milan fans lately, as the Rossoneri are currently working on two different ideas: staying in San Siro and building a new home in San Donato.

In our long read on Substack we explained everything at great length, so that is well worth a read if you want to understand the situation fully. The confusion is understandable and quite frankly frustrating, given how long the talk of a new stadium has gone on for.

Sala commented on the situation regarding the new home for the two clubs to Italia Oggi and he declared that March will be the time for a final decision.

“I have said many times that I would have preferred to fix the current one. But it is the football clubs that invest and, if they pursue the project of a new stadium, in the end we can only highlight the importance of not upsetting the habit of fans of going to San Siro and therefore finding a way to build it in the same area, in a reality that is well served,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).

“The expression of interest by the clubs was an important step forward. The moment of truth will be in March when they will deliver the revised economic and financial plan. Once approved, if all goes well, we will start the procedures to hand over the old stadium and areas to the clubs.

“The Revenue Agency has estimated the value of the stadium and areas at 197 million euros. A considered and indisputable evaluation was needed. If the companies are interested and everything works, they will pay that amount. We will use that money for the neighbourhood and for the poorest groups.”
