Marchisio praises Theo’s defensive efforts for France: “It didn’t happen”

By Isak Möller -

Theo Hernandez has been a key player for France in this World Cup tournament and he will be hoping to put in another good performance in the final today. Many have been surprised by his defending, better than expected.

Hernandez has always been known as a very attacking-oriented left-back and thus there were concerns when he replaced his brother Lucas Hernandez. The latter is a lot more defensive, also able to play as a centre-back.

However, Hernandez has done really well at the back (bar the penalty caused against England) and this has surprised many of the fans, but perhaps not the Milan ones. Speaking to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio spoke about this.

“It’s true, the switch from Lucas to Theo Hernandez, who is more offensive than his brother, could have created some imbalances, but it didn’t happen. And then there is Griezmann who has become an all-rounder and is essential,” he stated as cited by MilanNews.

Hernandez will play from start against Argentina later today and it looks like Olivier Giroud will do that as well, despite struggling with a slight knee injury. In any case, it should be a great game between two very good sides.

  1. It’s not talked enough how much better Theo has become in the defensive part of the game.
Now, granted, he doesn’t really have to go against any good right wingers in serie A, especially with Chiesa being out injured (after he destroyed him at San Siro 2 years ago), but still his defending has been massively improved.
