GdS: Mariani got crucial call wrong during Inter-Milan – ‘Handanovic did not protest’

AC Milan’s players and staff were left furious after Ismael Bennacer’s goal to make it 2-1 against Inter last night was called off for an alleged offside.

Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) talks about the offside goal which was probably the key incident in the Coppa Italia derby last night given the delicate moment the game was in and the momentum it would have given Milan.

Initially there were appeals from Inter players for a handball against Fikayo Tomori but that was quickly brushed aside as the ball came off his chest, but the referee Mariani was called over to the monitor to check a potential offside on Pierre Kalulu.

After consulting with the VAR chief and looking at the monitor, he considered the French defender to be actively offside. The paper writes that the final decision of the official was ‘perplexing’ because the offside was ‘more passive than active’ while ‘Handanovic did not protest’.
