Massara confirms Milan are ‘making important efforts’ to keep star duo; discusses Ibra’s Sanremo trip

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan director Ricky Massara has once again expressed positive feelings regarding the renewals of Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Milan will be looking to get past the Round of 32 of the Europa League for the first time in three years when they face Red Star in the second leg. You can read our match preview ahead of the game here.

Massara was interviewed by Sky Italia before the game against Red Star, beginning with a reflection on the challenge ahead tonight.

“We are ready to play a difficult match, we want to go through, we are aware of the importance of the match, we are calm,” he said (via MilanNews).

One of the subjects that is dominating the media attention surrounding Milan at the moment is the renewals of Calhanoglu and Donnarumma, as both have entered the final six months of their contracts.

“The dialogue continues, we hope it will end a happy negotiation. The club is aware of the value of these players, it is making important efforts, we hope to reach a positive solution quickly also for Donnarumma.”

The squad will be looking to put a difficult patch of recent form behind them as they have lost their last two Serie A games without scoring against Spezia and Inter.

“We must try to resume the virtuous path, we must show that we are growing, we are not worried as it is described, we are sure that this team can continue to do very well from now to the end of the season,” Massara continued.

Ibrahimovic’s appearance at the Sanremo Festival has been a big talking point for several weeks now, especially regarding how the player and Milan would organise the week, and the poor result results have only intensified the scrutiny.

On Ibra in Sanremo, Massara said: “It does not upset us at all, we were already aware of this commitment before the signing. We are very serene, we can manage a couple of personalized Ibrahimovic training sessions. He will continue to contribute to the growth of the team also from Sanremo”.

On the first leg against Red Star: “The game was less brilliant but the team tried to play, even in the defeat against Inter there was a desire to fight. The enthusiasm was never lacking, the points and the results feed it, we hope that the positive mood will return from tonight.”
