This afternoon, AC Milan pulled out of a deal to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta, due to a few reasons. However, the Frenchman will now head to surgery.
It has certainly been an interesting saga with Mateta, and the striker seemed almost guaranteed to be heading to San Siro at one point. Once again, the medical, though, was the issue, just as it was for Victor Boniface in the summer.
Last night, it was reported that further checks were required, and after the Milan representative saw the situation, the deal was called off soon after.
Yet, it was seemingly not that simple.
Surgery for Mateta
Now, with the dust clearing a little, Sacha Tavolieri has provided an update on what went wrong, via his X account.
“In addition to issues related to agents’ commissions, there was indeed also a physical problem. The Frenchman will need knee surgery to fully recover and would be out for 3 to 4 months.”
The agent issues seemed to be too much, and did play a factor. However, it was indeed a knee problem which seemingly killed the move. In fact, considering he will now have surgery for the injury – which keeps him out for several months – Milan may have made the right call.

Lol how convenient the injury is. Perfect excuse. We were just unlucky to have been after an injured CF all this time.
Yes, you’re right. The player is going to have kneew surgery and be out for four months as a cover up. 🙄🔫🙄🔫🙄🔫
This is what these pre-transfer medicals are for bub.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Are you for real or just oretending to be a clown
Most of you here are such massive clowns I hope you arent older than 15 because an adult acting like this would be cringe
i actually thought the player was playing through pain/injury because having a surgery right now means no chance of getting to the world cup. (he had a slim chance to begin with but still). I guess i’m naive
Was Palace hiding a knee surgery? That’s negotiating in bad faith. Nobody will go for him now.
GG to the managment. As was the case with Boniface in the summer they didn’t rush into decision but rather stayed cool. Although its questionable that they didn’t bring anyone for the attack or defence, lets try to secure CL spot, cause Scudetto is a hard task to achieve with this roster.
Hopefully they start preparing for summer in time because seeing how last few windows went, we are probably in for some serious spending(at least for serie a standards) and probably some sales but lets hope for them to give the best possible team to Allegri so we can compete next season in all competitions. Forza Milan!
Get your level headed comments out of here 😂
Big spending in the summer? Keep on dreaming!
A perfectly reasonable comment. What the heck are you doing here? 😊
At least the medicals were right
A knee problem has emerged , reported by the English press as early as mid-December, which presents the player with a difficult choice: for now. the Frenchman can continue playing on it , grit his teeth and continue with the injections, but with the risk of worsening the situation. Or he can undergo surgery to permanently resolve the issue and remain sidelined for a few months. It must be said that Mateta has continued to play despite his physical concerns, but Milan, as they did this summer with Boniface and Pubill, in light of all this, have chosen to pull out of the deal. This decision confirms the Rossoneri’s stance: no major nvestment without complete fitness guarantees.
by Pietro Mazzara.
Sounds like Boniface 2.0 and it’s true, I’m glad they dodged him. Mateta may or may not be the same player after the surgery but Milan can’t wait around to find out. We need someone who can make an immediate impact.
Yeah, it’s better to wait for Gimenez instead
Ok great an injury of this scale when he is 28 will be 29. Good we did some extra tests and know he instead can get a 26 year old Vlahovic that actually hve performed in serie a and under Allegri.
In doubts the transfer in the first instance. The agent commission and the transfer fee is a major reason.
Let hope for top four.
RLC and Nkunkun partnership. Great combo
We will make the top 4. Rafa at 70% and Puli not fully there can stil do enough for a top 4. (Udinese did us a favor yesterday)
Ahhhhhhhh!!! Well at least it wasn’t the TEETH!!!!!
Hahahahahahaahaha!!!!
Still stuck in the past are you?
Ahhhhhhhh Gorky boy!?!?! Did I hit a nerve kid? Lol. Should I have said “not another knee” instead!???
Teeth, knees what’s the fkn difference kid??? Nada.
The only thing that remains the same is a missed opportunity. I mean, they reported he may need surgery back in late December so no real surprise there. Could we not have gone for someone without a questionable injury everyone knew about??? Asking for a friend. Feels like smoke and mirrors. I’m sure with our luck he will go to the WC and star lol. Get a fkn CB – we need one. We have enough average strikers with Fulkurg Nkunku Gimenez and don’t need more
You would have been among the first to complain the minute he got injured.
He wouldn’t get injured. Dude is already injured and requiring knee surgery. Juro is a typical whiner on here.
There was no smoke and mirrors, Juro. The guy literally requires knee surgery and would be out for 4 months. So that’s 30-35 million euros on a player that will be out for 3-4 months and essentially have no impact on our standings?
You’re literally still talking about something from 15 years ago. You’re brain dead.
LOL. What a dip$hit you are kid. Can you even read??
“We have enough average strikers with Fulkurg Nkunku Gimenez and don’t need more”
That’s why I said we “don’t need more” – as in we don’t need Matea you fkn idiotic a$$ clown. So if you understood English, you would understand we are saying the same thing. LOL. Where do they find these mindless idiots.
LMAOOOOOOOOO!
This brought back some memories.
The funny thing is that Cissokho went on to have kind of a nothing burger of a career, so we didn’t miss out. In other words, good job Galliani. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’m actually ok with that we didn’t sign Mateta even if surgery hadn’t been needed but clearly there had been reports of him having inflammations in his knee. I would nevertheless have welcomed him had he joined us.
Overall an underwhelming transfer window but I really didn’t have any high expectations to beginb with either. A loan + some youth players for the Forturo is what we got. Down the road those acquisitions might turn out great but I don’t expect to see them play many minutes if any for the first team in the foreseeable future.
I think we should have gotten a RWB to compete with Saelemaekers though but C’est la vie.
Milan can now take their time and find a solid 9 in the summer. Or maybe Gimenez will have gone to google maps and found the location of the goal by then.
Kean or Dusan.
Knee surgery is always tricky. You hope for the predicted recovery time but you never know. Antonee Robison is a perfect example. At one point City wanted him but held off when he need surgery to relieve pain in his knee. He ended up being out for six months. Watching him I’m not sure if he has returned to 100%. Was CP trying to pull a fast one? You’ve got to commend ACM for doing their due diligence.
I’m just gonna say 30M plus for mateta felt like a reach. I think Milan dodged another potential January striker flop
However if mateta were to opt for surgery now and then sign as a free in the summer I’d be open to that. I just don’t see him being better than a 10ish goal a season striker for Milan. Vlahovic is 100% the striker for Allegri and should be the highest priority
Mateta’s contract expires summer 2027, not this summer.
Then he could come for half the fee mentioned especially after a period on the sidelines.
Whilst I think that’s possible, it wouldn’t surprise me if the relationship with Milan is a bit frosty now.
All in for Dusan now.
Vlahovic has his recovery estimated to ve 14 to 16 weeks, so signing him now presents the same risk as Mateta. Time will tell how this all unfolds.
The plan is always to get him in the next summer.
Understood, but to sign him in the summer, usually the contract is agreed and signed way beforehand then the rights to the player are officially transferred to the team. My point is signing him without him getting game time would be risky as signing Mateta. Especially given he is returning/recovering earliest March or April, we risk signing him without seing him perform after an injury and being off for 4 months without any action.
Juro, the guy is already injured. He requires knee surgery. This isn’t rocket science. If we signed him, and then boom… knee surgery and he’s out for 3-4 months. You’ll be whining on here about management.
And this isn’t something about some story that happened in 2009 about teeth. This is literally an issue with his knee and where he requires serious surgery at the age of 28.
Management called it right with Boniface, even though I wanted Boniface. Boniface has played almost nothing this season and scored nothing.
Get off some story from 15 years ago.
I mean seriously, how old are you? Probably in your late 60s.
Wow you really are a proper idiot kid LOL. You keep on rambling on about something that was never said and about a joke about Teeth??? Are you ok son??? LOLOLOLO
Are you that fkn dense kid?? When did I ever say that I even wanted to sign this guy??? It NEVER happened yet you keep going on and on like a broken record defending management for not buying him. Great. When did I say FOR management to buy him??? Never you dip$hit – I called him mediocre and not needed – we have enough of those kinds of strikers. I just made a joke about someone”s teeth and you flip out like I was insulting your brother. Are you lovers with Sissokko or something?? It’s ok u can be honest no judgement here. Perhaps you are just you mentally challenged, did you flunk grade 5 English or something?? Learn to READ kid.
What an IDIOT – go back to bed Gorky boy u fkn donkey – wait that is an insult to donkey 🤣. Just go back to bed kid
May have been the right call??????? Co.pletely the right calll, kudos to management for sticking to their process, and fck that agent wanting such large commission for a DUD
