Mayor Sala determined to see project approved: “Milan needs a 70,000-capacity stadium”

The Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala has once again stressed the importance of a new stadium being built in the city.

It has been quite a hectic few days relating to the stadium project that AC Milan and Inter hope to transform from a dream into a reality. A deal was agreed between the clubs and the council to buy the current San Siro and surrounding land, which is the first step in the proposed development.

Then, the two teams will build a new home next to their current one, before part demolishing the Meazza. However, it seems the crucial phase is between now and the end of the month, because the City Hall must vote in favour of the sale and at the moment things are up in the air.

Stadium is a ‘need’

Mayor Sala addressed the issue on Radio Bruno and he once again reiterated his desire to see a new state of the art stadium built in his city, with the comments relayed by PianetaMilan.

“Milan needs a 70,000-capacity stadium, which means an investment of one billion, one and a half billion. The public sector could never imagine such an investment. This pushes us to find a formula where the stadium is owned by the teams, who shoulder the investment,” he said.

“We recently passed a council resolution, which will now go to the city council, and we’ll see in the coming weeks if the council approves this idea. Meetings? We haven’t had any recent meetings, but we’re doing what we need to do.”
