Mazzara: Loan with an obligation – Milan ‘considering’ Fiorentina’s Adli proposal

By Ben Dixon -

Since the start of the summer, Yacine Adli has been linked with moves away from San Siro and AC Milan are in discussions with another Serie A club about a departure.

Towards the end of the 2023/24 season, Adli quickly went from inconsistent appearances to undroppable. However, when reports suggested that there would be a midfield rework in the summer, the Frenchman found himself on the chopping board.

In many respects, it is understandable why this decision was made. A master of none, you can debate if Adli really is a jack of all trades, and the outcome would be probably not. Offensively and defensively, there are issues, and that explains why Paulo Fonseca saw a departure as the best move.

Additionally, you have the question about where he would play this season. The Rossoneri have invested in the midfield, meaning their depth is somewhat better last season, and with this Adli is probably third, if not fourth choice in most areas of the midfield.

Therefore a departure seems inevitable. Brentford have shown signs of the most interest so far this summer, but nothing is progressing on that track, and reports have suggested there is interest from France and Spain as well.

Nevertheless, a report from Milan News journalist Pietro Mazzara states that Fiorentina are in talks with the Diavolo about a loan move with a mandatory buy clause inserted into the deal. Currently, that fee is in the region of €13-16 million.

  1. Mandatory would be great but I’m not sure Fiorentina are dumb enough enough to agree to our terms when they know we want to offload him. These days loan with option is the norm, it gives a team a full year to see if a player is a good fit in their system.

Exactly what we should have done with Emerson Royal, who spurs wanted to offload (and we were the only realistic buyer)

    1. yes, but the fee is going up/down depending on who carries the risk. if you give away a player with option to buy you can maybe ask 16mil, instead when you insert an obligation you can only ask for 13mil. basically, if Milan are allowing option (but therefore higher fee), they are still believing in the quality of the player which is a good thing imo.

  2. Why’s no one willing to try this guy in the AM position? Sometimes I wonder how a coach just comes in and be like, “hey you don’t fit into what I’m trying to do here!” One could even argue that Leao and Theo don’t fit into Fonsy’s style yet he’s found a way to accommodate them. Truth is that I love watching Toriani in Fonsy’s system more than I enjoy watching Mike in it but this isn’t to say that Toriani is a better goalkeeper rather it’s me saying that a coach can find a way to accommodate a player if they want to. But well, the squad is bloated so we just gotta find a way to chop off the chopped liver.

Also, it seems like Fonsy’s system isn’t made for star players but for team players. I don’t know who it was that said something similar in another article but the truth is that since the so-called star players returned and Fonsy tried integrating them into the team, we’ve gone from the brilliant football that almost made us warm up to Fonsy to the insipid kind of football that made us want to get rid of Pioli. Hope Fonsy can fix it soonest!

        1. One would think that RLC is the type of player who’d use his size to full effect but the guy seems like a reed in the wind: falls at every slight touch. I think the best way to get the best out of him is to bring him in when the opponents are tiring, not as the CAM but maybe as a B2B CM.

      1. Seriously how is Adli slow? There’s something you don’t really get about the type of player Adli is… He’s got a keen eye for a pass but how do you do that when your teammates just stand there ball watching? I assure you that even KdB – as good as he is when it comes to passing – will do nothing when his teammates just stand there watching the ball and waiting for it to come to them. I remember last season when he assisted Leao for a goal: Leao made a good run and Adli found him. The reason why the boy dwells on the ball for so long is because he’s probably hoping for someone to make a nice run but none of that happens and then the opponents may close in and dispossess him. Pass masters like Kroos and Modric will do absolutely nothing in this setup and you’re free to disagree.

        1. exactly, pass masters like Kroos and Modric do nothing if there is no oportunity for a good pass, but they keep the ball in the team. Adli instead is losing the ball (many times in dangerous areas). and its not like Adli always delivers when there is a good run. he regularly mishits crosses, where you cant even guess who the ball was meant for.

        2. I think his speed physically is made up by his mental awareness, but his issues are judgement of situations and not knowing his limits, very similar to Salesmeekers (he makes up for it with sheer hard work for the team).

Adli is a good player but not one we can move forward with and the chances of him ever being in the starting 11, are slim to none at AC.

Thanks for your passion Adli, all the best

        3. Adli is a low budget of young pirlo at inter and early years at Milan before he finds he’s rhythm with the helps of two no nonsense Defensive midfielders in Gattuso and Ambrosini who both does all the dirty work and recovery of ball for pirlo to dictate and distribute passes…. milan really need to switch to 3 man midfield to see better fashion of Adli with two strong Defensive midfielders beside him. I can argue Pirlo was more slower and easily get off the ball than Adli

          1. The game is a bit different today… You need muscle and I can’t understand why he can’t grow any… I would have preferably kept him but I don’t think he can develop with us, atm.

I would go for Ricci and a ST to save this season. For Locatelli haters who had little to no proper answers why he’s mid, look at Juve games…

  3. IF we keep him we should try Adli as a CAM – even if in a backup role. We don’t have one and that is his natural position. Can’t be worse than RLC. Pulisic is a RW and a good one at that.

    1. I think it was more so to give Saelemakers room in the squad.

      Reijnders (Pulisic, Liberalli)
Fofana (RLC, Musah) – Bennacer (new sub Regista)

Pulisic isn’t doing that great on the CAM role. And on paper Saelemakers would be a good Leao sub, but then the Okafor is the odd man out. Okafor’s ST performance wasn’t the most reassuring, but the entire team was a mess vs Parma. maybe Okafor can try CAM, he does give Jonathan David vibes and his false 9 qualities can translate well to CAM role.

      Reijnders (Okafor?, Liberalli)
Fofana (Kone?, Musah) – Bennacer (Ricci?, Zeroli)

If not then we should permanently promote Liberalli and take a gamble like Juve did with their sub fullbacks (and winning tbh, but they did play vs weakest teams) or we need another midfielder. RLC is also not a reliable player. And since Fonseca is still in the experimental phase this might really hurt us this season…

  4. we are disaster,i realy think this year i will not watch and read about Milan.Just look results.
I cant belive we cant bring great player and sell our better players then arrived. Next year we will have 10 “Origi and balo toure” and again nothing
