Mazzara: Milan squad ‘strengthened but not complete’ – the remaining moves to make

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s work in the summer transfer window is not yet complete, a journalist has claimed, and the main topic of conversation in the coming days will be sales.

Milan have so far brought in four players: Alvaro Morata joined from Atletico Madrid to be the new starting striker, Strahinja Pavlovic joined from Red Bull Salzburg to bolster the centre-back role, Emerson Royal has come from Spurs to provide competition at right-back and Youssouf Fofana was the most recent addition from Monaco.

Nonetheless, rumours are still swirling that there could be yet more business done by the directors, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic admitting at Fofana’s unveiling that the club are keen on Manu Kone of Borussia Monchengladbach. First, though, it will be necessary to offload players.

Pietro Mazzara provided an update on where Milan’s mercato stands during his latest editorial for MilanNews, touching on the three players who could leave and the final signing that might arrive.

“Transfer market chapter: the squad has been strengthened, but it is not complete. If the decision was made to focus on Morata for the striker, on Okafor (holy Noah, how underrated you are), Jovic (he only works as a second striker) and on the growth of Camarda, it is in the middle of the pitch that something is still needed,” he began.

“Adli, Pobega and Bennacer all have a suitcase ready and if Tommaso is working with the club and his entourage to find the best solution, for Yacine and Ismael there are different situations. The first has several exotic proposals, he would not like to leave Milan, but he risks ending up out of both the list for Serie A and (more obviously) that for the Champions League. It is not convenient for him on a career level.

“For Bennacer an offer is needed for the registration. After the knee injury, Isma has never been the same as before and if his departure were to serve to take Manu Koné from Borussia Monchengladbach, then the transfer is welcome. And then a real deputy Theo would be needed. Terracciano and Saelemaekers have shown that they are going haywire in that position.”

  1. We don’t need a player like Kone, we should sign a more defensive minded player than him, I think we should look at Pierre Lees Melou, also he has one year left on his contract so we can get him for cheap

    1. Kone is a very good player. He is a very good CAM. I do think that he might be better at CAM than Pulisic, so that Puli would go back to the RW from where he had the best season of his career, last year. Having Kone would allow us to keep developing Liberali’s muscles with Milan Futuro. Liberali is our future CAM but he is still too young to play regularly with the first team in official games.

      I would welcome Kone.

I think, though, that we need a deputy for Theo more than we need Kone. Terraciano and Saelemaekers have had truly terrible games as LB. Theo is strong and not injury-prone but he is also discipline-challenged and misses games due to accumulation of yellow cards, and red cards. Without a suitable deputy for him, we’ll be in trouble each time he doesn’t play. That, for me, is a more pressing need than yet another midfielder.

  2. We really need to work on cutting down the squad size and letting go of several players. And we really need to think about whether we want to keep Thiaw, whose mind seems elsewhere.

    1. His mind isn’t elsewhere, this is how he plays! He’s a terrible defender. Trying to rinse Newcastle for €40 million was absurd. By the end of the season, he won’t even fetch €20 million.

  3. I think in last 2 weeks there will be som moves… After first game they see what we need, for mé our attack is good, I don’t know IF this man see our squad list, and yes I know Rafa don’t has a good day, but still our attack is solid and maybe better then last year, bud defence is real problem, first I was ôk wit Kalulu sell, but now I think we need better solid defender because Thiaw make mistakes second seasson and Tomori don’t has always good day… Gabbia after loan in Spain is better but still, our defence from level 1-5 ( 5 is best) is somewhere around 2,5… IT is just first game and we receive 2 goals.. Like ones Sinisa said, IF you don’t receive a goal, you can’t lose. Attack will be great and midfield too ( Fofana, Reinders, Musah, RLC… Solid starters and bench players) but defence is the numero uno for fixing and maybe changes is needed in those positions

    1. Jovic isn’t doing us any favors.
      Thiaw is too error prone.
RLC isn’t fit for double-pivot nor Fonseca’s CAM role.
no regista to sub Bennacer instead of injury. sale should be excluded altogether.
      Terraciano isn’t ready.

These 4 would be added to my chopping list. I’d actually prefer to keep Adli over RLC.

      I hope:
either RLC sale and Kone as replacement, or Adli sale and Ricci/Loca addition.

sell Jovic and get Chiesa. Okafor will be sub-ST, while Saelemakers becomes sub for Leao, Chiesa can also go there if needed. (15M, I think)

Give chance to Terraciano and Thiaw, if not loan them out and get replacement for Thiaw.

  4. Yes Jovic is 3th striker for me, bench player not starter.. Okafor is more hungy and talented player.
We need to sell Thiaw (for around 20-22m is okey) and buy some replecement or try somebody for Milan Futuro… Or some loan Like Kiwior.
Terrachiano is close to by loaned to Como, same with Pobega to Bologna, both with options to buy..
For me best Bennacer was 2 years ago, now is tíme to sell HIM, he was not good in last game…
RLC is not for sell I think and Chiesa is close to Barca…
Our starting 11 is good, but we need more quality players in defence, Maybe Tomori with Paulovic will be great duo
