Mazzara: Theo wants to stay at Milan but value must be recognised – the figures

Theo Hernandez’s contract will expire in 2026 and it’s no secret that AC Milan would like to extend the deal. The negotiations will be tough, though, as the demands will be relatively high according to a report.

Thanks to the goal last night, Hernandez became the joint-highest-scoring defender in Serie A with 29 goals, equalling his idol Paolo Maldini’s record. In addition to that, he led Milan from the back and was a constant pain for Lecce, earning the MOTM in our player ratings.

The full-back’s importance is undeniable and after the game, he was asked about the future at Milan: “I’m very happy here, the fans love me and the team loves me and that’s the most important thing”. A clear signal the the management that he wants to stay.

According to Pietro Mazzara of MilanNews, Hernandez wants to be a true leader for this team and subsequently, he wants the new salary to match this status. However, he also knows that Milan don’t offer Premier League-level salaries and he’s fine with that.

The desire to sit down and talk about the renewal is there, with the left-back expected to ask for €6-7m plus bonuses per year to renew his contract. In other words, not €10m as has been rumoured by some in the last few months.

The ball is now in Milan’s court, who are on the home stretch for Mike Maignan’s renewal, which will have a fixed base of €5m per year. Then it will be Theo’s turn and he wants to be a leader, as long as his value is recognised by the club.

  1. He can eventually have a bad performance, heck, even a player like Messi has its bad days on the office, but fact that Theo is a fantastic footballer, probably our best player and one the best fallbacks in the world, if not the very best. So if an effort would eventually be needed to keep him at Milan, I guess he’s certainly worth the price.

  2. 6-7m/yr for a player of his caliber is a bargain in todays market. I do think he is a player that needs to be handled. The manager has to have a deft touch because like Leao he can be moody. But when he is motivated he is top 3 LBs in the world.

    1. 6-7m here is net salary though, plus tax it will be around 9-10m…

other league like EPL and La Liga, when talk about salary mostly talk about gross salary (after tax).

  4. You’re reading too much into it – Theo will be gone within two years, there’s not a realistic contract that will keep him here when Man City, Madrid or Bayern offer him a new challenge and a massive wage bump. Instead of weekly “he wants to stay but he just can’t find it within himself to sign for 7m post-tax per year”, let’s just enjoy whilst he’s here yes?

  5. From what I read, he didn’t say that he wants to stay, he said that he was happy in Milan, it might mean the same thing, but it technically isn’t the same thing.
Honestly I just hope we get over with this soon, we don’t have any good reason to let go of him.
We need to make more exceptions to our players, we can’t keep players with a ceiling of 5M€.
Now I’ve heard rumors that the growth decree “might” go back, I don’t know if it’s true, but maybe this is the reason why talks are stalling.
