Mediaset: De Zerbi open to Milan return as concrete contacts have begun

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are making concrete moves to try and hire Roberto De Zerbi as their next head coach, according to a report.

Brighton announced on Friday that they will part ways with De Zerbi at the end of the season after two years together, meaning that the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United yesterday was his last game in charge.

It didn’t take long for the Milan rumours to start, and SportMediaset report that there have been contacts between the Rossoneri and De Zerbi’s entourage in the last few hours to understand the feasibility of the operation.

Despite reports claiming otherwise there is still a release clause in De Zerbi’s deal, although it is a smaller amount than the previous €15m. The Paulo Fonseca option meanwhile is losing momentum, even if he is set to leave Lille.

De Zerbi has never hidden his attachment to the club and has admitted they have a very special place in his heart, meaning he ‘looks favourably’ on the idea of a return to Milan, but other Premier League clubs and also Napoli are keen on him too.

Both Mark van Bommel and Sergio Conceicao remain on the radar for Milan but they are far away, while the negative reaction towards the Fonseca links means that he is no longer being pursued so aggressively.

  1. This would be ideal, give him the project and support him. He has Milan DNA, and is one of the best if not the best coach currently in the market

  2. Amongs all names mentioned in the media, my preference will be one of these 3: De Zerbi, MvB, or Motta. Would be totally happy if Milan end up choosing one of them, especially the first two, as they have emotional connection with Milan. And coaches who played as midfielder during their playing career tend to have good achievement. Such as Xabi, Pep, Xavi, Conte (yeah I know, some of us hate him, but he is still considerably a succesful coach), Motta, Arteta (although these two haven’t won league as coach, but still, quite attractive football), Spalleti, etc. Not to stir any argument, just simply a humble observation

    1. How could you forget the most successful football manager ever who also played in midfield and is a Rossonero 😱

  3. If milan doesnt hire him, motta, conseicao or xavi and instead gets fonseca i will start start to consider if we are managed by dullards. I hope it isnt the case and for now i’ll keep some good will for them but all four above should suit a long term project.

  4. Would be an intriguing bet. But we need a coach that first of all is able to fix the defensive phase. And De Zerbi is not exactly that coach. I also don’t see how we can play from the back with defenders that are not technically gifted, especially Tomori.

    1. You have too many i dont knows there. Watch what he had at disposal in Bighton and what he has achieved and listen to what Pep has to say about him, add Milan DNA into the factor and dont worry just enjoy the ride

Unless we can bring Don Carlo back there is no better choice, he ahould be number 1 priority for us

    2. Our defense can be fixed by getting more Italians in the team. If you want players that have a brain, you buy Italy. If you want flair, you buy in France or Brazil or Spain. Each place has its identity. Keep gabbia and put buogiorno or Claritin next to him. Get Kayode for rb. That right there stops a vast amount of goals from the back line only.

  5. De Zerbi seems to be way better choice than Fonseca, but I wouldn’t get too excited about it. His Sassuolo and Brighton played nicely, but he has not won anything yet, and has only managed mediocre teams, not sure he would be able to handle team with high expectations as Milan. He is not like XaviAlonso or Motta who were in top teams as players and got chance to learn from best managers. Also, De Zerbi’s current season in league with Brighton was poor, only 11th place (Brighton market value is 9th in Premier League).

Hiring him gives a bit more hope than Fonseca, but it’s not like he is a top coach.

    1. Is Motta a top coach?
Is motta better than De Zerbi?
      What has Motta won?

Please explain if you think Motta is better than De Zerbi after just 1 season, and how is he better.

      1. @Malda mate, but where did I say that Motta is better than De Zerbi?

But if you bring him to the table, then in my perception Motta wins because he has more potential as a coach – he only started coaching in 2019 and already brought Bologna to the Champions League. De Zerbi is a coach for over 10 years and did not win anything yet…

Plus, like I mentioned, Motta had chance to play in top teams under top coaches – he played in Barcelona, Atletico, Inter, PSG, Italy National Team under Louis van Gaal, Frank Riijkard, Jose Mourinho, Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery and probably more that I missed. This is top of the top, you can’t compare that experience with De Zerbi, with all respect to RDZ…
