Reports: Improve mentality and performance – Milan have the new Mourinho

AC Milan have been looking for a top-tier head coach for some time, and it seems they may have found one in Sergio Conceicao, with some deeming him reminiscent of Jose Mourinho.

It could be argued that having a top-level coach can be more impactful than having some players, and we are already seeing this to a degree with Conceicao. Under Paulo Fonseca, certain key players struggled to show their best.

With Conceicao, there has already been a notable difference. Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao, Milan’s two biggest players, have returned to their former states, and whilst the team still needs work, there are signs of something special brewing.

It is those signs that link Conceicao to the Special One, Jose Mourinho. Radio Rossonera first recalls how Gazzetta dello Sport described the new head coach, and how he is reminiscent of his fellow former Porto coach.

He has brought the ‘Rossoneri world back down to earth‘, his football is concrete and when communicating there are also similarities.

Corriere dello Sport then looks to the comebacks, and how they ‘never happened’ under the former head coach. For Conceicao, his motivational levels are clearly above his predecessor, and perhaps comparable to another iconic Portuguese coach.

It is early days of course, but Conceicao could be as big for Milan as Mourinho was for Inter, at least that is what will be hoped inside the walls of Casa Milan.

  1. Without a proper mercato and quality players this team is going nowhere under Conceição. Honestly, I would prefer if Moncada, Furlani and Ibra get replaced by a proper sporting director who knows how to build a winning team.

These bozos have been signing mostly useless and wasting money They are clueless about what is needed to make this Milan team competitive.

This season is a failure and the futuro project is also a failure.

      1. “fofana too has been average” … Tell me you don’t understand what you’re watching, without telling me what you don’t understand what you’re watching …

  2. Gotta love these complete overreactions. Maybe mentality but not performance. The performances have been pretty poor.
Let me play Devil’s advocate for a minute.
In 4 matches we have won 3 and drew 1. Good results except for the draw against Cagliari.
    Now the performances…

The first half against Juve was as bad a half of football as you will ever see. The second half was better but it took a bad penalty given by Rabiot and a freak own goal deflection for us to win that match. I would not say we outplayed Juve in that match.

In the Inter match we showed great heart coming back from 2-0 to win but let’s be honest. If not for a few brilliant saves from Maignan Inter could have very easily had 4 or 5 goals against us. I would not say we outplayed them.

Cagliari we outplayed them and should have won that match , but just had some poor finishing.

Como took it to us and outplayed us for the majority of that match. Milan was quite literally grabbing and hanging on for dear life. Not a good performance.

So in 4 matches we have scored zero goals in the first half and we have trailed in 3 of the 4 games.
Also I would say that the only match where we actually outplayed our opponent was the one draw oddly enough. Better lucky than good I guess.
Also I would push back on Theo, aside from the second half of the Inter match he has not been very good. His defense is just as bad as ever. See the goal Juve scored on us, the goal Como scored on us.
Maybe we should just hold off a bit before calling him the next Mourinho.

    1. This isn’t plug’n’play, pal. Conceicao will need plenty of time to get this team to actually consistently execute right from the start in matches. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was Milan.

But credit when credit is due. A change in mentality is pretty obvious. The come-from-behind victories would have likely been losses under Fonseca. The performances aren’t vintage, you’re right. But the fight/grinta is there more than ever before. Ant that ought to be lauded.

If you’re “cautiously optimistic” about Conceica, it’s fair. Would have been better to bring him last summer. But he IS a good coach for this Milan because he is a mentality monster and plays a very direct, vertical football. The kind that will be great for Milan when on full display.

I personally wanted Conte or Motta on the bench, Sarri as a last ditch option. But I am good with Conceicao.

  3. I don’t think the change in mentality is as obvious as you think. Could be just the new coach bump where everyone has to prove themselves again to the new coach. The same issues of struggling against weaker teams is still there.
Not to mention he has managed to take something we were good at in our corner kicks and kind of ruined that with those stupid short corners and not having Pulisic take them for some reason.

The thing I’ll give him credit for is making good substitutions and not waiting too long to make them.

Hoping for the best but I’ll believe it when I see it on the pitch.
